Increasingly, there is an expectation that secondary schools will prepare students for the full range of post-school options. Schools are facing the difficult task of preparing diverse students for an increasingly pluralistic society in an uncertain world, in rapidly changing times. Schools are expected to prepare students for the future, whatever that future may be. To do so, they are expected to work with a variety of stakeholders
such as other educational institutions, community, industry, business and voluntary organisations. This requires educators in the senior phase of learning to understand the nature of senior phase and post-school pathways, the changing policy context and implications for schools and educators in relation to curriculum, pedagogy, leadership and collaboration.
In recent times both Federal and State Governments have identified the need to provide suitable pathways for students so they can transition effectively from the school setting to further study and training or into the workplace. This course will provide students with a framework for developing their knowledge and awareness of how the role of senior schooling is changing and also provide opportunities for students to reflect upon the changing role of the teacher in secondary schools. The course utilises a case study strategy to ensure the students meet and discuss contemporary issues related to pathways with experts in the school setting. With the emphasis upon supporting students as they choose the most appropriate pathways for their future, the students in this course will investigate processes currently in place related to career planning and education.
The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. The
assessment item(s) that may be used to assess student achievement of an objective
are shown in parenthesis. On completion of this course students will be able to:
demonstrate understanding of the impact of societal change on the purposes of
education, the role of the educator and the role of the school (Assignment 1 and 2)
demonstrate knowledge of contemporary education policy and initiatives and
their impact on secondary schooling (Assignment 1 and 2)
- demonstrate understanding of issues relating to the transition of students from school to work and further education and training and the range of educational responses, strategies and initiatives designed to support successful transitions for all students including under-represented groups (Indigenous, CALD, non-metropolitan etc). (Assignment 1 and 2)
- demonstrate an understanding of career planning and career education and their significance in preparing students for their futures and analyse the impact of career planning and career education on the work of teachers (Assignments 1 and 2)
- conduct an in-depth analysis of a topic of interest related to transitions in secondary education and discuss implications for the changing role of schools, teachers, students and the nature of the curriculum (Assignment 1 and 2)
- demonstrate competence in written language and scholarly writing including correct spelling, grammar and bibliographic referencing (Assignment 1 and 2)

Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks.
Penalties for late submission of required work:
If students submit assignments after the due date without (prior) approval of the examiner then a penalty of 5% of the total marks gained by the student for the assignment may apply for each working day late up to ten working days at which time a mark of zero may be recorded. No assignments will be accepted after model answers have been posted.
Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
