MMID pre-registration students must be commencing the clinical contract with partner hospital in this semester.
Midwives practise within an inter-professional environment to provide woman centred care. Students need to develop midwifery knowledge and skills to participate in collaborative models of maternity care for women to function safely and effectively as members of a multidisciplinary health care team to ensure positive health outcomes for women. Midwifery enlists the use of research evidence to inform ethical decision making.
The course builds on knowledge and skills introduced in MID8070 and MID8001. The emphasis is on the perinatal and postnatal period. Students will appraise a variety of models of care offered through maternity services. Pathophysiology and associated management including pharmacology of alterations from normal childbirth provide the foundation for midwifery care. Concepts for clinical decision making for complexities in infant feeding issues will be explored. Students will learn to apply evidence informed practice using Page's five steps of midwifery inquiry.
This course includes a one (1) week residential school to facilitate interprofessional network development within the health care system through a USQ partner hospital.
On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Critique current research literature and utilise in Page’s five steps of midwifery enquiry to inform best practice maternity care.
- Demonstrate appropriate advocacy to ensure valid consent to an individual's choice of care.
- Use a woman-centred approach to compare and contrast the physical, psychosocial and spiritual parameters of models of care related birth practices.
- Apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology to promote maternal and fetal wellbeing;
- Develop an understanding of pathophysiology and pharmacology to provide quality collaborative care for women with alterations from normal childbirth.
- Develop clinical decision making skills for managing complexities of infant feeding.
- Demonstrate competence and safety in clinical midwifery practice.
|1.||Women in Childbearing. The stories of mothers and midwives will be compared and contrasted to integrate theory, evidence-based literature and practice (including indigenous women). Issues include late pregnancy to birth (normal and an overview of common complications of childbirth) and the postnatal period.||20.00|
|2.||Women's experiences of labour, physiology and mechanisms of labour, including perinatal emergencies [Malpresentation: Breech, Oblique Lie, Transverse, Face; Obstructed labour; Maternal distress; Fetal distress; Cord compression and cord prolapse; Shoulder dystocia], neonatal screening and assessment, including blood groups & RH compatibility, physiology of pain and pain management during childbirth; Pharmacological & non-pharmacological management during the perinatal phase.||30.00|

|4.||Childbearing Epidemiology. This module examines: safety of hospital births and other settings including perinatal morbidity and mortality; forming partnerships in alternative settings; natural and complementary therapies in pregnancy and birth; water birth ; women's and midwives' experiences of non-institutional birth; partners' experiences of non-institutional birth siblings' experiences of being involved in childbirth; safe sleeping; safe infant transport.||15.00|

Important assessment information
Attendance at a 36 hr (1 week) residential school is compulsory for this course. If medical documents support a student's inability to attend residential school then the student will be advised by the course examiner of equivalent make-up work to be completed by the end of semester. It is the students' responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. Students are required to attend women through continuity of care experiences and maintain contracted supervised professional experience with a USQ partner hospital. Students are required to follow twenty (20) women through in continuity of care as a mandatory requirement. Students must recruit a further ten (10) women to participate in continuity of care experience and have a total minimum of twenty (20) women recruited by completion of this semester (Concurrent with MID8074). Students must demonstrate participation with women in continuity of care which meets criteria outlined in the Professional Practice Portfolio on the PMP meta-course site. Details for ethical recruitment of women, commitment to continuity of care and documentation required for formative and summative assessment will be included in the Professional Practice Portfolio. The minimum requirement for Professional experience in this program is 800 hours, which is to be carried out over the duration of the Program. Continuity of care hours average 20 hours per woman over the care continuum and may be incorporated into paid or unpaid hours.
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To complete an assessment item satisfactorily, students must obtain at least 50% of the marks available for a) the choice and consent online activity; b)Be the Midwife project and c) Portfolio including online reflection on continuity of care .. To satisfactorily complete the Professional Practice, students must provide care for women experiencing stages in childbearing which include listed mandatory experiences identified in the Professional Practice Portfolio. In addition, key clinical skills, as outlined in the course objectives and in the Professional Practice Portfolio, must be assessed by a registered midwife and signed off as 'proficient', as measured by the relevant USQ Standardised Clinical Assessment Tool (USQSCAT). Students will then be awarded 1 mark for Professional Practice. Otherwise 0 marks will be awarded for this item.
Penalties for late submission of required work:
If students submit assignments after the due date without (prior) approval of the examiner then a penalty of 5% of the total marks gained by the student for the assignment may apply for each working day late up to ten working days at which time a mark of zero may be recorded. No assignments will be accepted after model answers have been posted.
Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the summative assessments and satisfactorily complete Professional practice assessments and competency evaluations as outlined in the Professional Practice Portfolio for the MID8073 course. Failure to demonstrate ANMC competency or meet continuity of care requirements components of Professional Practice will result in a Fail grade for this course. Should attrition of continuity of care women occur to take the student below the recommended number for this semester, the student may negotiate ongoing recruitment, so long as completion of continuity of care with these women is guaranteed for S2 2013.
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the weighted aggregate of the marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
There is no examination in this course.
Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
There will be no Deferred or Supplementary examinations in this course.
University Student Policies:

The due date for an assignment is the date by which a student must despatch the assignment to the USQ. The onus is on the student to provide proof of the despatch date, if requested by the Examiner.
Students must retain a copy of each item submitted for assessment. This must be sent to USQ within 24 hours of receipt of a request to do so from the Examiner.
The examiner may grant an extension of the due date of an assignment in extenuating circumstances.
Students who do not have regular access to postal services or who are otherwise disadvantaged by these regulations may be given special consideration. They should contact the examiner of the course to negotiate such special arrangements.
In the event that a due date for an assignment falls on a local public holiday in their area, such as a Show holiday, the due date for the assignment will be the next day. Students are to note on the assignment cover the date of the public holiday for the Examiner's convenience.
Students who have undertaken all of the required assessments in a course but who have failed to meet some of the specified objectives of a course within the normally prescribed time may be awarded the temporary grade: IM (Incomplete - Make up). An IM grade will only be awarded when, in the opinion of the examiner, a student will be able to achieve the remaining objectives of the course after a period of non-directed personal study.
Students who, for medical, family/personal, or employment-related reasons, are unable to complete an assignment at the scheduled time may apply to defer an assessment in a course. Such a request must be accompanied by appropriate supporting documentation. One of the following temporary grades may be awarded IDS (Incomplete - Deferred Examination; IDM (Incomplete Deferred Make-up); IDB (Incomplete - Both Deferred Examination and Deferred Make-up).

Evaluation and benchmarking
Student evaluations will be compiled to evaluate the student experience, relevance of the course content and the effectiveness of course delivery. Clinical milieu data will be extrapolated to maintain Clinical contractual arrangements with appropriate and supportive clinical agencies. It is expected that all students undertaking this course will complete the online student evaluation.
