Nursing is a diverse practice profession and the inclusion of a sequence of professional experience courses is fundamental to ensure that the graduand is a safe beginning practitioner. Clinical roles and responsibilities for Registered Nurses focus on the concepts of caring, holistic care, best clinical practice, oral and written professional communication, professional values including integrity and ethical decision-making and critical thinking including reflection on practice. It is therefore essential that students have a sound grounding in the application of theoretical principles of nursing practice and an understanding of professionalism required by the Registered Nurse for quality patient care.
This course will provide students with opportunities to demonstrate the performance and responsibilities required for safe practice. NUR2499, allows the student nurse to develop their professional interactions, therapeutic relationships, nursing care practices associated with caring for individuals, families and significant others, critical thinking and clinical decision making within a medical or surgical clinical setting. (NUR2100 is a pre-requisite). The aim is to develop skills introduced in prior lab and clinical courses (NUR2800 and NUR2199) and to apply knowledge learnt from past or concurrent theoretical courses. Students will be required to be reflective about their clinical practice experiences for both their professional development and lifelong learning journey. Students will participate in a 160 hour clinical placement and be assessed at the interim and end stages using an assessment tool consistent with the National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse.
On completion of this course students will be able to:
- Conduct clinical practice which can be ethically justified and in accordance with legislation and common law (ANMC Competency 1 and 2) (U1. Ethical research and enquiry skills)
- Integrate and apply knowledge of the independent and collaborative role of nursing to nursing practice situations (ANMC Competency 3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10)
- Demonstrate through both written and oral communication and care planning the preservation of an individual's integrity and awareness of their unique values, beliefs, customs and culture, which provide the framework for that individual's experience of health, illness, or death (ANMC Competency 2, 9, 10) (U4. Written and oral communication skills, U5. Interpersonal skills, U6. Teamwork, U7. Cultural literacy skills, U8. Management, planning & organisation skills)
- Demonstrate the ability to critically analyse events and intervene appropriately to plan, implement and evaluate safe and appropriate nursing care for vulnerable clients experiencing compromised health by using systematic data collection and effective clinical reasoning strategies, incorporating evidenced-based practice (ANMC Competency 3, 4 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10) (U2. Problem solving, U3. Academic and professional literacy, U4. Written and oral communication skills
- Perform clinical procedures under appropriate Registered Nurse supervision, that have been introduced in the pre-requisite course NUR2199 Clinical AA: Situated Practice (ANMC Competency 9)

- Due 1 week after completion of student's allocated clinical placement.
- Due date of Interim evaluation is for interim evaluation to be signed by student and preceptor and dispatched to examiner within 2 days after student has completed 10 clinical shifts.

Important assessment information
It is the student's responsibility to: (a) attend 100% of the clinical placement period (160 hours) within the assigned weeks which have been allocated through the SONIA clinical placement allocation system. (b) attend all shifts as allocated at the beginning of the clinical placement by the preceptor or mentor (these may involve day shifts, evening shifts, night shifts, weekend shifts and public holidays). Changes to rostered shift will only be considered for extremely extenuating circumstances and require the written permission of the examiner of the course in collaboration with the health care facility. (c) attend and participate appropriately in all activities scheduled for item a, as part of this practicum either on campus or at the clinical venue including orientation, briefing sessions, debriefing sessions, tutorials or in-service. (d) be informed about course-related activities and administration (e) access and obtain all material provided to complete course objectives and activities
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To complete the Clinical Performance Evaluation Tool/Timesheet satisfactorily, students must obtain a mark of 1. To achieve a mark of 1, students must complete attendance of 160 hours of placement in the allocated time and submit a completed timesheet and achieve each of the competencies to to the level indicated on the Clinical Performance Evaluation Tool.
To complete the Interim Evaluation Tool satisfactorily, students must obtain a mark of 1. To achieve a mark of 1, students must obtain the signature of their preceptor/mentor on the completed Interim Evaluation and submit this to the examiner within two days after completing 10 shifts of the clinical practice.
To complete the Post Clinical Reflection satisfactorily, students must obtain a mark of 1. To achieve a mark of 1, student must fulfil the requirements stated in the study materials on the StudyDesk.
Penalties for late submission of required work:
If students submit required assignments late without the approval of the examiner they can expect to be given a score of 0 for the Clinical Evaluation Tool and Timesheet. This will then result in a Fail grade for the course.
Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of a pass in this course, students must submit the Clinical Evaluation Tool and Timesheet, the Interim Evaluation Tool and the Post Clinical Reflection, and achieve the mark of 1 available for each assessment item. As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an Incomplete grade.
Note that a conceded pass is not available in this course due to accreditation requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an Incomplete grade.
There is no examination in this course.
Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
As there are no examinations in this course, there will be no deferred or supplementary examinations. There is no supplementary clinical time. The objectives for clinical practice must be satisfactorily completed within the allocated time or a failed grade will result. A Conceded Pass is not available in this Clinical Course.
University Student Policies:

Students must retain a copy of each item submitted for Assessment. If requested, students will be required to provide a copy of assignments submitted for assessment purposes. Such copies should be despatched to the USQ within 24 hours of receipt of a request being made.
The due date for an assignment is the date by which a student must despatch the assignment to the USQ. The onus is on the student to provide proof of the despatch date, if requested by the Examiner.
The Examiner may grant an extension of the due date of an assignment in extenuating circumstances.
The Faculty will normally only accept assessments that have been written, typed or printed on paper-based media Clinical Evaluation Tools must be submitted as the original document with signatures of the supervising Registered Nurse.
The Faculty will NOT accept submission of assignments by facsimile.
Harvard (AGPS) is the referencing system required in this course. Students should use Harvard (AGPS) style in their assignments to format details of the information sources they have cited in their work. Students need to be conversant with and will require access to e-mail and internet access to UConnect for this course.
Students can expect that questions in assessment items in this course may draw upon knowledge and skills that they can reasonably be expected to have acquired before enrolling in the course. This includes knowledge contained in pre-requisite courses and appropriate communication, information literacy, analytical, critical thinking, problem solving or numeracy skills. Students who do not possess such knowledge and skills should not expect to achieve the same grades as those students who do possess them.
Students of clinical courses must submit the following documents to the Faculty Office by the due date given for the current semester's SONIA allocations or a clinical placement will not be offered.
These documents include: a) Current CPR Certification b) Completion of the Queensland Health Orientation Deed Polls, c) submission of the Hepatitis B titre declaration and titre results, d) signed and dated USQ declaration on Page 3 of the Clinical Placement Handbook; and e) Suitability for Working with Children Card (Blue Card) f) a current Police Certificate and g) Student placement checklist. Failure to adhere to submission of all required documentation by the due date will result in the student unable to attend a clinical placement and may result in a failed grade in the course
Mandatory Reporting with AHPRA
It is the studentís responsibility to notify the course examiner if they have a health impairment, which may result in conditions being placed upon their student registration with AHPRA. Education providers, such as USQ are required by law to report certain notifiable conduct (see http://www.ahpra.gov.au/Support/Glossary.aspx#N) and students must be aware of their responsibilities under this legislation. Administrative action may occur if a student fails to notify the course examiner of an APHRA notification made in relation to their practice.
