Nursing is a practice profession and as such the inclusion of a sequence of professional skill experiences is fundamental to ensure safe practice not only as a beginning practitioner, but also as a student during their clinical practicum in other courses. This course allows students to blend the foundational knowledge gained in first year courses with clinical decision making and professional nursing skills in order to be able to enact professional evidenced-base nursing care. Students are able to learn clinical procedures in a safe environment to a level that allows them to continue to develop and refine these skills in the professional experience placements of their clinical practicum.
This course applies the concepts of professional nursing care to client assessment and management in a simulated situation. Students utilise simulated learning situations, and associated and assigned preparation for laboratory sessions to propose and demonstrate appropriate client care across the lifespan. Students assess priorities according to the data at hand to demonstrate skills in clinical decision making and evaluate both their own and their peers' performance in simulated situations. A holistic approach insures development of students' personal and therapeutic communication skills with the aim of producing learners who are able to demonstrate assessment skills, prioritise care, discern appropriate actions and evaluate both risk and quality of care. Case studies are utilised to give the academic, psychomotor, social and therapeutic skills a context in terms of client variances and evidence for appropriate nursing practice.
On completion of this course students will be able to:
- Identify the appropriate theory, the principles for nursing practice and the evidence for practice which support the implementation of psychomotor nursing skills. (ANMC competencies 2 - 5, 7, 9,)
- Demonstrate adequate, accurate, effective and efficient professional written communication. (ANMC competencies 6, 7, 9, 10)
- Identify and demonstrate professional therapeutic oral communication skills and effective teamwork in interactions with peers and supervisors. (ANMC competencies 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10)
- Analyse the potential for risk, hazard and quality in therapeutic procedures. (ANMC competencies 1, 2, 3, 7 – 10)
- Demonstrate accuracy in medication calculations. (ANMC competencies 1, 2, 7)
- Demonstrate appropriate technique in the administration of medications, infection control, manual handling and other procedural skills as presented in laboratory scenarios. (ANMC competencies 5 – 10)
- Identify evidence for practice of psychomotor skills encountered in lab situations and for the nursing interventions related to the disorders in health which are presented in the topics and the case studies. (ANMC competencies 1 – 3, 5)
- Demonstrate appropriate patient assessment and clinical decision making from physical symptoms, psychological state and social constraints / supports in the case studies presented in simulation. (ANMC competencies 1, 2, 5, 8, 9)
- Propose appropriate patient teaching, guided by theoretical principles for case studies presented. (ANMC competencies 2, 7, 9)
- Apply nursing informatics and other forms of technologies in the delivery of best possible client care and participating in lifelong learning.
- Demonstrate appropriate professional demeanour, dress, work ethic and respect for equipment in the simulated clinical laboratory. (ANMC competencies 1-4, 10)

Important assessment information
Attendance and participation in laboratory sessions is mandatory. It is the students' responsibility to attend 100% of the clinical laboratory sessions and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To pass the Laboratory sessions students must attend and successfully participate to achieve the (1) allocated for this assessment item. To pass the Assignment, Laboratory skills assessment and Restricted Exam, students must achieve at least 50% of the marks for each item. (Depending upon the requirements in Statement 4 below, students may not have to satisfactorily complete each assessment item to receive a passing grade in this course.)
Penalties for late submission of required work:
If students submit assignments after the due date without (prior) approval of the examiner then a penalty of 5% of the total marks gained by the student for the assignment may apply for each working day late up to ten working days at which time a mark of zero may be recorded. No assignments will be accepted after model answers have been posted.
Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve the allocated mark of (1) for attendance and participation in Laboratory sessions and at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course. Students MUST attempt all assessment items.
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks/grades obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
Candidates are allowed access only to specific materials during a Restricted Examination. The only materials that candidates may use in the restricted examination for this course are: writing materials (non-electronic and free from material which could give the student an unfair advantage in the examination); calculators which cannot hold textual information (students must indicate on their examination paper the make and model of any calculator(s) they use during the examination); Examiners may also like to allow students access to unmarked non-medical/nursing translation dictionaries during a restricted examination and a suitable addition to the above statement in this case is: Students whose first language is not English, may, take an appropriate unmarked non-electronic translation dictionary (but not technical dictionary) into the examination. Dictionaries with any handwritten notes will not be permitted. Translation dictionaries will be subject to perusal and may be removed from the candidate's possession until appropriate disciplinary action is completed if found to contain material that could give the candidate an unfair advantage.

Deferred or Supplementary examinations for this course will be held in the exam period of the semester following this course.
University Student Policies:

Students must retain a copy of each item submitted for assessment. If requested, students will be required to provide a copy of assignments submitted for assessment purposes. Such copies should be despatched to USQ within 24 hours of receipt of a request being made.
The due date for an assignment is the date by which a student must despatch the assignment to the USQ. The onus is on the student to provide proof of the despatch date if requested by the Examiner.
The examiner may grant an extension of the due date of an assignment in extenuating circumstances.
The Faculty will normally only accept assessments that have been written, typed or printed on paper-based media. It is the preferred method of this course that all assignments are submitted through EASE.
The Faculty will NOT accept submission of assignments by facsimile.
Students who for medical, family, personal or employer related reasons are unable to complete an assignment or sit for an examination at the scheduled time may apply to the examiner to defer an assessment in the course. Such a request must be accompanied by appropriate supporting documentation. One of the following temporary grades may be awarded; IDS (incomplete deferred examination), IDM (incomplete deferred make-up), IDB (incomplete both deferred examination and make-up work).
Where a student has failed to achieve a passing grade by 5% or less of the aggregated weighted marks, or equivalent in the grading scale, the examiner in agreement with the moderator will consider recommending to the Board of Examiners the undertaking of supplementary assessment by the student, if the student has undertaken each of the required summative assessment items for the course.
Students need to be conversant with and will require access to e-mail and internet access to UConnect for this course.
Students can expect that questions in assessment items in this course may draw upon knowledge and skills that they can reasonably be expected to have acquired before enrolling in the course. This includes knowledge contained in pre-requisite courses and appropriate communication, information literacy, analytical, critical thinking, problem solving or numeracy skills. Students who do not possess such knowledge and skills should not expect to achieve the same grades as those students who do possess them.
Students must wear appropriate dress when attending laboratory sessions.
