Organisations impact greatly on many aspects of our personal and professional lives. They define the way services are delivered, communication channels, policies and standards and how they are monitored, who holds the authority and power, information systems and the level of satisfaction of the people who work in and/or access the services provided by the organisation. Nurses need to know and understand the structure and function of organisations and their impact on care delivery services. Commensurate with this is the understanding that all nurses regardless of their position participate in the roles of manager, leader and/or follower in organisational settings. To successfully incorporate these roles into their professional practice nurses need to have knowledge and understanding of the principles of management, leadership, followership, team building, conflict resolution and quality assurance.
The primary purpose of this course is to facilitate the development of a broad view of the structure and functioning of healthcare organisations, their impact on health care models and the role of nurses as leaders and managers within health care systems.
On completion of this course students will be able to:
- identify the major organisational theories;
- examine the role and relationship of organisational mission statements, philosophies and communication of information on the delivery of health care;
- recognise how organisational structures, climate and culture impact on nursing;
- identify the major leadership and management theories;
- discuss the application of leadership/management theories in practice settings;
- use critical thinking skills to analyse team building and conflict resolution strategies within the scope of practice of nurse leaders/managers;
- develop an understanding of quality assurance and accreditation issues;

Important assessment information
There are no attendance requirements for this course. However . it is the students' responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. Two 2 hour face- to-face tutorials are offered to meet sponsored student requirements. Attendance is mandatory for sponsored students. Other students are welcome to attend these sessions which will be recorded and available on Study Desk.
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To complete an assessment item satisfactorily, students must obtain at least 50% for that item.
Penalties for late submission of required work:
If students submit assignments after the due date without (prior) approval of the examiner then a penalty of 5% of the total marks gained by the student for the assignment may apply for each working day late up to ten working days at which time a mark of zero may be recorded. No assignments will be accepted after model answers have been posted.
Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the weighted aggregate of the marks obtained for the summative assessment items in the course.
Exams in this course are restricted: Candidates are allowed access only to specific materials during a Restricted Examination. The only materials that candidates may use in the restricted examination for this course are: writing materials (non-electronic and free from material which could give the student an unfair advantage in the examination). Students whose first language is not English, may, take an appropriate unmarked non-electronic translation dictionary (but not technical dictionary) into the examination. Dictionaries with any handwritten notes will not be permitted. Translation dictionaries will be subject to perusal and may be removed from the candidate's possession until appropriate disciplinary action is completed if found to contain material that could give the candidate an unfair advantage.
Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
Any Deferred or Supplementary examinations for this course will be held in the examination period of the next semester following this course offering.

The due date for an assignment is the date by which a student must submit the assignment via EASE on study desk. The onus is on the student to provide proof of the submission date, if requested by the Examiner It is the studentís responsibility to ensure that an EASE submission is in the correct format and is the final version of the assignment. Resubmission due to error will not be accepted after the due date. Hardcopies or emailed versions will not be accepted.
If requested, students will required to provide a copy of assignments submitted for assessment purposes. Such copies should be despatched to the USQ within 24 hours of a request being made.
In accordance with University Policy, the Examiner may grant an extension of the due date of an assignment in extenuating circumstances.
The Faculty will normally only accept assessments that have been written, typed or printed on paper-based media.
Students who have undertaken all of the required assessments in a course but who have failed to meet some of the specified objectives of a course within the normally prescribed time may be awarded the temporary grade: IM (Incomplete Makeup). An IM grade will only be awarded when, in the opinion of the examiner, a student will be able to achieve the remaining objectives of the course after a period of non directed personal study.
Students who, for medical, family/personal, or employment-related reasons, are unable to complete an assignment or to sit for an examination at the scheduled time may apply to defer an assessment in a course. Such a request must be accompanied by appropriate supporting documentation. One of the following temporary grades may be awarded IDS (Incomplete - Deferred Examination; IDM (Incomplete Deferred Make-up); IDB (Incomplete - Both Deferred Examination and Deferred Make-up).
Where a student has failed to achieve a passing grade by 5% or less of the aggregated weighted marks, or equivalent in the grading scale, the examiner in agreement with the moderator will consider recommending to the Board of Examiners the undertaking of supplementary assessment by the student, if the student has undertaken all of the required summative assessment for the course.
