Rationale

Contemporary nursing practice mandates that Registered Nurses (RNs) are knowledgeable, competent, caring, adaptable and effective team members and demonstrate clinical reasoning skills including critical thinking. This clinical placement experience is critically significant for students for shaping their future career choices and influencing their lifelong learning journey. They can identify with professional approaches to evidenced-based care, and the role of the Registered Nurse as leader and case manager. This professional experience placement, in a supervised clinical learning environment is important to consolidate students' professional learning experiences and to facilitate the transition from student to beginning Registered Nurse.

Synopsis

This final clinical course will allow consolidation of the knowledge, skills and attributes required for safe and competent practice expected of Registered Nurses. Students will participate in a 160 hour clinical placement and be assessed at the interim and completion of the practicum using an assessment tool consistent with the National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse. The course will provide facilitated or preceptored clinical placement opportunities for students to fulfil the requirements of the National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse.
As a result of satisfactory completion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate competent, holistic, coordinated and prioritised client/patient care through the processes of clinical reasoning, clinical decision-making and critical reflective practice. Students will be expected to apply professional ethics, legal requirements and safety/environmental responsibilities to their practice. Students will be required to demonstrate the application of theory and principles learned in past and concurrent theoretical courses to demonstrate analytical and reasoning skills using evidence-based practice. They will also be expected to demonstrate: a) a high level of professional oral and written communication skills, b) the ability to work as a team member and c) the ability to manage their time and workload to the level expected of a beginning practitioner.

Objectives

On completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate clinical practice which can be professionally and ethically justified, and in compliance with legislation, risk management principles and common law; (ANMC Competency 1, 2 and 10)
  2. Demonstrate a commitment to professional development of self and others through attendance and participation in in-service sessions, critical reflection, collaboration, networking, debriefs, handovers and other situated activities; (ANMC Competency 4)
  3. Demonstrate a commitment to, and application of, "best practice" using an Evidence Based Practice and quality framework (ANMC Competency 3, 4 and 10)
  4. Integrate and apply theoretical knowledge of the collaborative role of nursing by proposing and demonstrating safe and effective nursing interventions for patients/clients in written form) and in demonstrated practice during clinical placement(ANMC Competency 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10)
  5. Demonstrate the ability to critically analyse events and intervene appropriately to plan, implement and evaluate safe and appropriate nursing care for clients experiencing compromised health by using systematic data collection and effective clinical reasoning strategies and, incorporating evidenced-based practice; (ANMC Competency 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10)
  6. Demonstrate appropriate professional communication in written and oral form, through shift handovers, written assignment, written documentation, referrals, telephone and face to face communication with clients, families, nursing staff, preceptor/mentor and other health professionals; (ANMC Competency 8, 9, 10)

  2. Interim Evaluation is to be signed by student and preceptor and dispatched to examiner within 2 days after student has completed 10 clinical shifts.

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    It is the students' responsibility to: a) attend and participate in 100% of the clinical placement period (160) hours within the assigned weeks which have been allocated through the SONIA clinical placement allocation system. b) Attend all shifts as allocated/rostered at the beginning of the clinical placement by the preceptor or mentor (these may involve day shifts, evening shifts, night shifts, weekend shifts and public holidays). c) Changes to rostered shifts will only be considered for extremely extenuating circumstance and require written permission of the examiner in collaboration with the health care facility. . d) Attend and participate in all activities scheduled for them as part of this practicum either on campus or at the clinical venue including completion of preclinical mandatory requirements, orientation, briefing sessions, debriefing sessions, tutorials and in service. Be informed of course related activities and administration. e) Access and obtain all material provided to complete course objectives and activities.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To complete the Clinical Evaluation and Timesheet satisfactorily, students must complete 100% (a mark of 1). To achieve a mark of 1, students must complete attendance of 160 hours of placement in the allocated time and submit a completed timesheet and achieve each of the competencies to the level indicated for each competency on the Clinical Evaluation Tool. a.

    To complete the Interim Clinical Report satisfactorily, students must obtain 100% (a mark of 1). To achieve a mark of 1, students must obtain the signature of the preceptor/mentor on the clinical Interim Evaluation and submit this to the examiner within 2 days after completing 10 shifts of the clinical practice..

    To complete the Online Clinical Reflection satisfactorily, students must obtain 100% (a mark of 1). To achieve a mark of 1, students must complete an online clinical placement reflection.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    If students submit required assignments late without the approval of the examiner they can expect to be given a score of 0 for the workbook and clinical evaluation tool. A Fail grade for the course will then result.

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of a pass in this course, students must submit each assessment item and achieve 100% for each mark of 1 available for Interim Clinical Report, Clinical Evaluation and Timesheet and Online Clinical Reflection.

    As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an Incomplete grade.

    Note that a conceded pass is not available in this course due to accreditation requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an Incomplete grade.

  6. Examination information:
    There is no Examination in this course.

  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    As there are no examinations in this course, there will be no deferred o supplementary examinations. There is no supplementary clinical time. The objectives for clinical practice must be satisfactorily completed within the allocated time or a failed grade will result.

  8. University Student Policies:

Assessment notes

  1. Students must retain a copy of each item submitted for assessment. If requested, students will be required to provide a copy of assignments submitted for assessment purposes. Such copies should be despatched to USQ within 24 hours of receipt of a request being made.

  2. The due date for an assignment is the date by which a student must despatch the assignment to the USQ. The onus is on the student to provide proof of the despatch date if requested by the Examiner.

  3. The examiner may grant an extension of the due date of an assignment only in extenuating circumstances. If students submit required assignments late without the approval of the examiner they can expect to be given a score of 0 for the workbook and clinical evaluation tool. A Fail grade for the course will then result.

  4. The Faculty will normally only accept assessments that have been written, typed or printed on paper-based media. Clinical Evaluation Tools must be submitted as the original document with signatures of the supervising Registered Nurse.

  5. The Faculty will NOT accept submission of assignments by facsimile.

  6. Students need to be conversant with and will require access to e-mail and internet access to USQ Connect for this course.

  7. Students can expect that questions in assessment items in this course may draw upon knowledge and skills that they can reasonably be expected to have acquired before enrolling in the course. This includes knowledge contained in pre-requisite courses and appropriate communication, information literacy, analytical, critical thinking, problem solving or numeracy skills. Students who do not possess such knowledge and skills should not expect to achieve the same grades as those students who do possess them.

  8. Harvard (AGPS) is the referencing system required in this course. Students should use Harvard (AGPS) style in their assignments to format details of the information sources they have cited in their work.   2. Students can expect that questions in assessment items in this course may draw upon knowledge and skills that they can reasonably be expected to have acquired before enrolling in the course. This includes knowledge contained in pre-requisite courses and appropriate communication, information literacy, analytical, critical thinking, problem solving or numeracy skills. Students who do not possess such knowledge and skills should not expect to achieve the same grades as those students who do possess them.

  3. Students of clinical courses must submit the following documents to the Faculty Office by the date given for the SONIA clinical placement allocations for the current semester's clinical placement or clinical practice will not be offered. These documents include: a) - Current CPR Certification b) Completion of the Queensland Health Orientation Deed Polls (inclusive of placement, confidentiality and privacy); and Queensland Health Student Checklist c) submission of proof of Hepatitis B immunisation; d) signed and dated USQ student checklist declaration; and e) Suitability for Working with Children Card (Blue Card); f) National Criminal History Police Check and in some facilities Disability Services Qld Card . Failure to adhere to submission of all required documentation by the due date will result in the student unable to attend a clinical placement and a failed grade in the course.

  4. Mandatory Reporting with AHPRA

    It is the studentís responsibility to notify the course examiner if they have a health impairment, which may result in conditions being placed upon their student registration with AHPRA. Education providers, such as USQ are required by law to report certain notifiable conduct (see http://www.ahpra.gov.au/Support/Glossary.aspx#N) and students must be aware of their responsibilities under this legislation. Administrative action may occur if a student fails to notify the course examiner of an APHRA notification made in relation to their practice.
