Rationale
Methods of Statistical Inference are the basis of much decision making. A basic understanding of the concepts and techniques of statistical inference is highly desirable for a practitioner of statistics.
Synopsis
This course provides the students with a firm grounding in the theory and methods of statistical inference and builds on the material covered in STA2301 Distribution Theory. Parametric and nonparametric applications are covered.
Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to:
 determine point and interval estimators for distributional parameters and discuss the properties and distributions of those estimators;
 understand the principles of hypothesis testing and power of a test;
 apply the principles of hypothesis testing to a wide range of situations including parametric and nonparametric testing;
 solve for and make inferences about the parameters of a linear model.

Important assessment information

Attendance requirements:
There are no attendance requirements for this course. However, it is the students' responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of courserelated activities and administration. 
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To complete each of the assessment items satisfactorily, students must obtain at least 50% of the marks available for each assessment item. 
Penalties for late submission of required work:
If students submit assignments after the due date without (prior) approval of the examiner then a penalty of 5% of the total marks gained by the student for the assignment may apply for each working day late up to ten working days at which time a mark of zero may be recorded. No assignments will be accepted after model answers have been posted. 
Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course. 
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment components (the examination and assignments) in the course. 
Examination information:
Candidates are allowed access only to specific materials during a Restricted Examination. The only materials that candidates may use in the restricted examination for this course are: writing materials (nonelectronic and free from material which could give the student an unfair advantage in the examination); calculators which cannot hold textual information (students must indicate on their examination paper the make and model of any calculator(s) they use during the examination). Students whose first language is not English, may, take an appropriate unmarked nonelectronic translation dictionary (but not technical dictionary) into the examination. Dictionaries with any handwritten notes will not be permitted. Translation dictionaries will be subject to perusal and may be removed from the candidate's possession until appropriate disciplinary action is completed if found to contain material that could give the candidate an unfair advantage.
