Semester 2 (ONC)TWMBA (EXT)TWMBA
Units 1 () Band 1
It is assumed that students will come into this course with a sound knowledge of normal child development and theories of human development. The course will expand upon that basic knowledge in an exploration of how the infant develops into a fully functioning member of human society. There will be a focus in three areas: (1) cognitive/perceptual development; (2) social development, including the importance of others (particularly family members) in the process; (3) development of language and conversational skills. Each of these areas will be examined in relation to the child's growing awareness of self-the "I"-and the concurrent development of interactional and pro- social/moral behaviours. There also will be discussion about the sometime failure of development of these skills. The course will continue through middle and late childhood to early adolescence.
