Synopsis

This course takes a critical perspective of the biomedical model of health and challenges the assumption that health is determined by biology. An analysis of health from a social perspective will occur. Students will examine the role that social factors such as culture, employment, education and socio-economic status play in determining health outcomes. Students will examine the role this socially just model of health played in informing the development of the health strand of the Queensland Yrs 1-10 Health and Physical Education (HPE) syllabus and Senior Health Education syllabus. The course will conclude with the pedagogical implications for the teaching of health education. Intending students should have regular access to electronic resources such as email and the Internet.
