Synopsis

It is expected that students will complete 160 hours of clinical practice and 8 hours of briefing/debriefing in a setting pertaining to the care of Mental Health clients. Student placements may include any setting where Mental Health clients are provided care and include rural and remote hospitals, tertiary hospitals, acute inpatient facilitieswithin general hospital settings, community health care centres, correctional facilities, aged care facilities, drug rehabilitation centres. This course further develops the student nurse in relation to professional interactions with the health care team and patients in mental health settings. The aim is to further develop skills introduced in the first year of the program and to allow authentic practice of those skills covered in the theory course NUR2200 and the Situated Learning Course NUR2199. Strategies that the nurse can use to give holistic, culturally appropriate and effective care are developed and applied, guided by the Standards of Practice for Mental Health Nursing in Australia (ANZCMHN 1995) as a framework for decision making. Reflective practice is anticipated, using an Inquiry-based framework. This course allows the student to develop critical thinking and analysis in relation to evidence-based practice. It aims to allow practice in the conduct of comprehensive and systematic nursing assessment, as well as care planning and implementation at an introductory level. It allows the student to practice the establishment, maintenance and conclusion of therapeutic relationships.
