Synopsis
This course introduces students to the theoretical and methodological issues and concepts of ethnomusicological research. The course addresses the historical development of ethnomusicology as well as current trends in theoretical approaches to the study of music and methods of understanding music in the context of culture. Topics include fieldwork, ethics, transcription and analysis, performance ethnography, observation and participation, and world music. Case studies of music from several cultures and continents will be examined. Practical examples will be used to enable students to apply theory to practice and students are strongly encouraged to attend live performances throughout the semester to supplement the topics.
