Units 1.0 (Psychology) Band 1

Recommended Pre-requisite: PSY1020 and (PSY2100 or STA2300)

Synopsis

The course starts with an introduction to human information processing, and a revision of sensation and perception (initially covered in Foundation Psychology B). The course builds upon this material by examining visual and auditory perceptual processes and associated brain structures. Following sensation and perception, attention and attentional theories are also covered (and examined in the mid-semester CMA test). The course then deals with memory over short retention intervals, working memory and factors involved in producing long-term memories, as well as reasoning and the influence of emotion on cognition (examined in end of semester exam). In addition, the course allows students to build skills in the analysis of simple datasets, graphing of results and the writing of APA-style Results sections (examined in Assignments 1 and 2).
