Synopsis
The port planning process includes knowledge from many areas of transportation and civil engineering. The course includes definition of municipal and specialised ports, and description of types of harbours. The infrastructure necessary for port operations is studied including breakwaters, wharves, shipping channels and navigation aids. The landside includes warehousing and stockpiling, and land transportation modes. Typical shipping types and characteristics are detailed. Planning inputs are studied, together with likely scenario outcomes. Typical loading rates for various cargoes and shipping types are explained. Harbour dredging and dredge types and suitability are discussed. Environmental aspects are listed, and provision of small craft facilities in commercial ports are studied. The course notes are illustrated with photographs of various vessels, harbours and terminals.
