Synopsis
This course has two modules. The first will introduce students to complementary theoretical perspectives used in mental health nursing including Peplau's theory of interpersonal relationships, the behaviourist perspective, the cognitive approach, the psychoanalytic perspective, and the humanist perspective. Students will be encouraged to apply these theories directly to practice.
The second module of this course will relate these theories to mental health nurses' understanding of mental illnesses. This course has a requirement for a clinical placement in a mental health area where students will have the opportunity to enhance their learning with clinical practice working with people with mental illnesses.
