Discovering Landcare
Discovering Landcare is an annual event that the Queensland Murray Darling Committee, in conjunction with Landcare and other sponsors and departments, holds. USQ Creative Communities has appeared at the 2005, 2006 and 2007 Discovering Landcare conferences.
2005
Chris Vernon (Acting Major) played Captain Catchment much to the delight of the vast numbers of primary school children.
Theatre staff and students as well as staff and postgraduate students from Visual Arts provided an array of workshops that linked artistic endeavour to environmental concerns.
2006
Matthew Armstrong and Kim Rann braved latex and spandex to become Captain Catchment and Woody Weed for the 2006 Discovering Landcare Conference. Held in the Hume Street Church of Christ building, the conference once again drew a large crowd from a variety of schools from south-western Queensland and the Darling Downs.
Workshops were again provided by Theatre and Visual Arts personnel to connect young learners to using the expressive arts to articulate their place in their local environment.
2007
Dr Janet McDonald and Carley Commens presented to the secondary participants of the conference. The Dirran DVD films were played in the background while Janet and Carley explained the different facets of the work that Creative Communities undertakes. A collaborative canvas from St George State School was displayed as part of the presentation.
