Northern Inland Academy of Sport (NAIS) Regional Athletic Coach Education (RACE) Project
This project provides basic sport science and sports medicine training to over 200 pre-elite adolescent athletes and their families living across the vast New England and North West Region of New South Wales. USQ is a partner in NIAS RACE through the Centre for Rural and Remote Area Health (CRRAH).
The program builds sports science and sports medicine knowledge and skills, and increases personal and athlete development and sports participation. RACE presents community workshop in sport medicine, nutrition, psychology, and media for athletes and their coaches, families and friends in Glenn Innes, Inverell, Moree, Narrabri, Armidale, Tamworth and Gunnedah each year.
The USQ-NIAS partnership to delivery sport psychology services to country athletes commencd in 2000. However Steven Christensen and Andrea Lamont-Mills re-developed the original sport psychology program in late 2003 to make it more relevant and accessible to country athletes.
This is the first purpose built sport psychology program for pre-elite adolescent athletes living in regional, rural, and remote locations. It focuses on sport psychology as mental equipment. It produces sport psychology as local, low cost, and low tech equipment that can be readily taken to training and competition via the NIAS Mental Equipment Packs.
