Phoenix Award

Would you like to improve your employability whilst getting the most out of your University experience? If so, the Phoenix Award provides an opportunity for you to receive formal recognition for any work experience or extra-curricular activities you complete while studying, and demonstrates to employers the full range of skills you have to offer.

What is the Phoenix Award?

The Phoenix Award aims to assist students in becoming well-rounded graduates by highlighting the knowledge, skills and abilities which are necessary for a successful transition of a student into the workplace. It aims to enhance employability by addressing these qualities of a graduate and correlating these attributes to employability skills. To gain Phoenix Award points you need to get involved in a variety of approved activities. These activities include:

  • participating in social, cultural or sporting events
  • attending workshops or seminars (i.e. first aid or coaching qualifications)
  • participating in a Committee (i.e. Student Representative or a Faculty Committee)
  • participating in paid or volunteer work.

The Phoenix Award aims to assist students in becoming well-rounded USQ graduates by highlighting the skills, attributes and personal qualities which are necessary for successful university study, transition to the workplace and good citizenship. The Phoenix Award is a valuable addition to a student’s academic record and curriculum vitae (CV). It aims to enhance employability by addressing requirements related to Employability Skills and the Qualities of a USQ Graduate.

How do I qualify for the Phoenix Award?

To qualify for the Phoenix Award students must undertake and complete a range of activities aimed at providing experiences and opportunities which are conducive to their development of the Qualities of a USQ Graduate and the skills identified in the Employability Skills Framework.

The Phoenix Award aims to recognise the activities that many students are already participating in such as paid/volunteer work, involvement with the cultural, academic or social clubs on campus or in their local community, additional training (e.g. first aid training, coaching qualifications), participation in social, cultural and sport events, and USQ committee membership as a student representative. Students may be required to complete some additional activities in order to meet the below requirements of the Phoenix Award.

While enrolled in their USQ studies, a Phoenix Award student must accrue 1000 points by participating in or undertaking a range of approved roles and activities. Phoenix Award students are also expected to submit a 3000 word reflective journal outlining what has been learnt while participating in each activity and how their participation has contributed to the development of the graduate qualities and employability skills listed.

Phoenix Award points are allocated to students based on the time involved and follow-up requirements of a particular activity. The point allocation for activities varies from ten points to three-hundred points.

Successful completion of your academic award is a co-requisite for the Phoenix Award.

Why participate?

Students are encouraged to become a Phoenix Award participant for a number of reasons. Participation in the Phoenix Award provides students with an opportunity to:

  • develop your skills to engage with a diverse range of people
  • expand your network base and meeting new people
  • build your confidence by applying your knowledge
  • be recognised for the skills you have developed.

Successful participants are awarded the Phoenix Award at the end of their USQ studies. These students will receive a certificate along with an activity statement document which outlines the skills and abilities they have developed while participating in the Phoenix Award. The award is a great addition to your curriculum vitae and portfolio.
