Make an appointment

Drop-ins

Normally, the first time you access the counselling service will be via a 15 minute face-to-face or telephone DROP-IN session. This is not a counselling session, but gives you the opportunity to see a counsellor relatively quickly and they can determine whether you need an urgent appointment, make sure you’re getting help from the most appropriate source, and perhaps provide you with some helpful resources or information. If you and the counsellor agree that you would benefit from individual counselling, you will be offered a full appointment.

There are a limited number of drop-ins available and appointments can only be booked on the same day on a first-come, first-served basis.

Prior to your drop-in session, the receptionist will ask you to complete a Client Details Form and will provide you with information about Privacy and Consent. We require your signed consent before you engage in any of the counselling services, including the drop-ins.

Full Appointments

You may be offered a full individual counselling appointment after you have attended a drop-in. Full counselling sessions are for approximately 50 minutes, and for many people one appointment is enough to resolve the issue. Further appointments can be made if necessary, but the counselling is usually short-term, with up to six sessions. Sometimes clients may be referred to appropriate practitioners off-campus if long term counselling or specialised services are required. Further information about your initial appointment with one of our counsellors is available.

Counsellors are available for appointments Monday to Friday during business hours. Our Counselling Service runs during recess periods but is closed on public holidays and when the University is not open, for example, over the Christmas period.

Unable to make your session?

We recognise that there may be times when you are unable to keep an appointment. If this should occur, please contact us to cancel or reschedule the appointment, thereby allowing someone else the opportunity to see a counsellor in your place. Students who fail to show up for their appointments on several occasions without notifying reception, will forfeit their eligibility to access the service, unless there are exceptional circumstances.

If we leave messages for you

Telephone messages (e.g., about a change of appointment time) may be left for you on the number you have provided. In keeping with confidentiality, the message will not mention the Counselling Service, and will usually be in the name of a member of the Health and Counselling Services reception staff.

If you prefer that messages are handled in a different way, please discuss this with your counsellor.
