Evacuation procedures
The building should be evacuated when the evacuation siren sounds for longer than 30 seconds.
Cease all activities and leave the building immediately by the designated fire / emergency exits or as directed by Safety Staff. The Building Warden will be wearing a white hat. Floor Wardens and Safety Squad members will be wearing orange hats. The floor plans indicate exits to be used by staff in each zone.
All occupants should:
-
leave personal possessions behind
-
do not lock doors
-
use designated Fire / Emergency Exit stairs ONLY – do not use the lift or Main Circulation stairwell
-
proceed to the designated Assembly Area on the northern side of the building (lawn area between E, Y and Z blocks). During inclement or hot weather, gather under the northern end of Z block
-
persons with a disability causing them to be unable to evacuate the building without assistance are to be assisted by someone assigned to them and who is working in close proximity to them.
-
persons with a disability are to be helped to move to a designated “safe area” (safe areas are generally into fire stairways furthest from a fire) where they are to wait till evacuated by Fire Brigade personnel
-
the Building Warden will advise the Fire Brigade on its arrival of any persons with a disability in the building and the Fire Brigade will determine a method of evacuation
-
following evacuation, keep clear of building entrances
-
follow the direction of Safety Staff and do not re-enter until directed.
Bomb threat
-
DO NOT ACTIVATE THE ALARM SYSTEM
-
talk to the caller in a calm manner finding out as much information as you can
-
try to find out where the bomb is located, what it looks like and when it is likely to explode
-
keep the caller talking as long as possible and do not hang up
-
attract a nearby person in your area and write a note alerting them to the situation; that person should call Emergency telephone X2222
-
do not activate the alarm system
-
when direction to evacuate is given, move to a safe area well away from the building
-
follow the direction of Safety Staff and do not re-enter until directed.
