Entry requirements

  • Year 12 English (4 SA) or equivalent

    Each applicant must bring the following to their interview:

    • a passport-sized photo of themselves
    • a school exit statement or evidence of previous education standard achieved
    • folio of achievements and references (see specific information for each major below)
    • 500 word project or one page statement addressing criteria (see specific information for each major below)

    Visial Arts

    All applicants for the Visual Arts major must:

    • present a folio of recent or current works. This will not be retained by USQ after the interview.
    • present photographs of your artworks that are too large to bring to the interview. The photographs must provide an indication of the scale of your work.
    • provide a statement (approximately 500 words) addressing the following: interestm enthusiasm and purpose in studying visual arts; career aspirations; knowledge of visual arts processes and theory; demonstrated perceptual ability and hand skills; critical abilities; and evidence of self-motivation, initiative and commitment. The submission should be typed and signed by you, with a statement which certifies that the work is your own. Please present your submission at interview.

    Visual Arts- Distance education studies (external)

    All visual arts courses can be completed by distance education (external study).

    Distance education Visual Arts students should note the following further requirements:

    • interviews can be arranged by telephone at the applicant's request.
    • please provide your folio and 500 word statement prior to the telephone interview.
    • only Arts Management and theory courses are available by external offer.
    • the following practical studios are not available by distance education study (external): ceramics, printmaking, linear construction, spatial construction, painting.

    Domestic students (Australian and New Zealand) apply to QTAC or can apply directly to USQ depending on your circumstance.

    In addition, you must register to attend an audition/interview as part of the application process.

    Applying directly to USQ:

    • Semester 2, 2013 - applications close Monday 1 July 2013
    • Semester 3, 2013 - applications close Monday 28 October 2013
    • Semester 1, 2014 - applications close Monday 17 February 2014.

    Credit for previous study or work experience

    You may be eligible for credit if you have previously studied or have relevant work experience. This will help to reduce the number of courses that you need to study to finish your program.

    Alternate pathways to university study

    A number of other pathways are also available if you haven’t been able to study previously or don’t meet the requirements for entry into your program of interest.

    International entry requirements

    English language requirements

    • IELTS: 6.0 (or better) (no component lower than 5.5)
    • TOEFL (paper based): 550 (or better) (with minimum test of written English score of 4.5) 
    • TOEFL (electronic): 213 (or better) (with essay rating of at least 4.5) 
    • TOEFL (internet based): 80 (or better) (with 19 minimum in all bands) 
    • Pearson (PTE Academic): 50 (or better) (with no communicative score lower than 50) 
    • Singapore, Hong Kong, British 'O' Level English: 'C' or better

    Pre-requisites

    Year 12 Senior Certificate or equivalent from a recognised institution. Find your country's level of qualification and minimum entry requirements for this program.

    • Interview
    • On the day of the interview present a reasonably broad folio of recent work completed over the past two years. The folio should show an awareness of drawing from life, and an understanding of different media. We only require access to the folio on the day of the interview so the applicant can take it after the interview process has been completed.
    • Anything which is too big for the folio and for carrying, should be photographed provided the photographs are well taken, sharply focused and gives an indication of the scale of the work.
    • The criteria used for selecting students includes interest, enthusiasm and purpose in studying visual arts; career aspirations; knowledge of visual arts processes and theory; demonstrated perceptual ability and handskills; critical abilities; and evidence of self-motivation, initiative and commitment.
    • Prepare a 500 word or 1 page statement addressing the above criteria and outline of artistic interest.

    Each applicant must bring the following to their interview:

    • a passport-sized photo of themselves
    • a school exit statement or evidence of previous education standard achieve
    • folio of achievements and references.
