To qualify as a barrister, you must first become admitted to a Supreme Court of Australia and then sit the Bar Readers Course. After completing the course you read with an experienced barrister for a nine months. After you have completed this mentorship period you will be eligible to practice as a barrister. While not compulsory, most barristers work as a solicitor for a number of years before moving to the Bar.
The following pathways will help you on your journey to working as a Barrister and have both been accredited by the Legal Practitioners Admissions Board, Queensland and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Queensland as an approved academic qualification under the Supreme Court (Legal Practitioner Admission) Rules 2004 (Qld).
Barristers are legal practitioners who have specialist education and training to legally represent clients on legal matters in court, such as for trials, hearings and tribunals. Barristers generally work for themselves and receive instruction and briefings on legal cases from solicitors. They may also be involved with other legal work such as mediation or legal referees.
