How do I qualify as a Psychologist?

The following pathway will help you on your journey to working as a psychologist by meeting the requirements for registration as a psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHRPA):

1. Bachelor of Science (Psychology) + Bachelor of Science (Honors) OR Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) OR Any Bachelor Degree + Graduate Diploma of Psychological Studies + Bachelor of Science (Honours)

AND

2. Postgraduate Diploma of Professional Psychology + 1 year supervised practice OR 2 years supervised practice OR Master of Psychology.

What is a Psychologist?

Psychologists study human behaviour, the factors that may influence human behaviour and use scientifically established processes to help investigate a range of personal and social issues.

Professional psychologists are experts in:

  • human behaviour
  • personality
  • interpersonal relationships
  • learning and motivation

Psychologists are in demand in a wide range of workplaces. Many students end up working in roles that do not have the title of psychologists. These include welfare officers, youth workers, support workers and employment officers in areas such as child safety and corrective services. Psychologists also work in various sectors including education, Defence, consulting and training and development.
