How do I qualify as an Early Childhood Teacher?

The following pathways will help you on your journey to working as an Early Childhood Teacher:

 Option 1

To work in a kindergarten or other early childhood centres

If you would like to work in a kindergarten or other early childhood centre (not in a primary school), you do not require teacher registration.
 Option 2

To work in a primary school – prep to year 3

If you would like to work in a primary school from prep to year 3, you will require teacher registration and therefore need to complete a 4-year degree.
 Option 3

Already have a Bachelor’s degree?

If you already have a bachelor’s degree and would like to work in either a kindergarten, early childhood centre or primary school, you will need to complete:             AND
  • Some basic education units in math, science, and English may need to be studied prior to enrolment in the Graduate Diploma of Learning and Teaching.

What is an Early Childhood Teacher?

Early childhood teachers are involved with the education of young children aged birth to eight years. They implement teaching programs and learning environments that focus on the child’s development including planning play activities, storytelling and music, organising excursions and monitoring the child’s development including identification of developmental issues and recommending appropriate follow up pathways.

Early childhood teachers work in a variety of settings including childcare centres, kindergartens, primary schools (prep to year 3), government children’s organisations as well as nanny services, cruise ships, teaching English overseas, among many others.
