What are they on about?

Majors, minors, undergrads, post grads, OP, on-campus, online!! What are they on about?

We know all these new terms can be confusing, so before we go any further here’s a crash course in uni jargon 101 and what it all means.

Undergraduate study – you’ve never completed a degree, takes 3 to 4 years.

Postgraduate study – undertaken after you’ve completed a degree or have equivalent work experience.

For domestic students, Part-time is 1 or 2 subjects per semester.

Full-time is 3 or 4 subjects per semester.

Major and minor – A major is typically 8 subjects and a minor is usually 4 subjects.

Distance and online.

This means you are provided with all your study materials for each semester through the mail or via the internet. If there’s anything else you don’t understand just do a search on our website.

Now you might have some nagging doubts about uni, this is normal because the truth is there are plenty of myths floating around, so let’s sort the facts from the fiction:

I don’t have time.

At USQ we offer flexible study options that let you choose how you want to learn.

I’m not smart enough.

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to study; you just have to have a desire to learn something new.

I suppose I was a bit daunted, I didn’t know if I would be smart enough to do it, whether I would have the time to, you know, apply myself fully. I did one subject and thought ‘I’ll see how I go’ and then in the next semester I did two units and thought ‘okay, I can do this’.

I can’t afford it.

Payment options like HECS mean uni isn’t out of reach for most people. See our costs video for more info.

I’m too old.

You’re never too old to go to uni. Don’t let age be a barrier!

I’ll be alone!

At USQ you’re never alone because we pride ourselves on giving you personalised support. No matter how you’re studying, you can always find help. All you have to do is ask.

Student video: Mary
It had an enormous variety of students, so it didn’t matter whether you were straight from school or mature age or somewhere in-between, you managed to find more people like you and it also lead to some pretty interesting friendships which had that diversity in the student body.

So there you have it, hopefully that clarified a few things for you…
…but if you still have questions feel free to give us a call.
