Faculty Learning and Teaching Awards
The following academics have been awarded for excellence in Learning and Teaching 2008 in the following categories:
Teaching Excellence (Early Career) - Alice Brown
Alice shares her teaching philosophy and pedagogical approach with on-campus and external students using images and metaphors in a memorable and engaging fashion at the commencement of the course. Alice¹s strategy not only establishes a distinct teacher presence, but clearly influences, motivates and inspires her students, engendering reciprocal learning roles and responsibilities. A strong positive connection to the class and their learning is sustained throughout the semester.
Teaching Excellence (Early Career) - Janice Jones
Janice fulsomely engages her students through authentic assessment of the creative arts. Through novel responses to assessment challenges, she helps them develop compelling insights into their own learning and teaching practice. Student comments portray enthusiasm and gestalt moments of student learning as parallel and intertwined with teacher learning journeys. External feedback endorses the impact of these authentic assessments.
Programs or Services that Enhance Learning - Stephen Smith
Steve's partnership project Unearthing Student Quality: Mentors Up-skilling Men works with local male teachers to provide mentorship to beginning male pre-service teachers. Over the two years of operation Steve has increased retention of students participating in his program and developed a growing pool of male teachers volunteering to be mentors. Mentor and student comments attest to the program's success in developing collaborative approaches to learning and teaching.
