Our postgraduate programs are currently being reviewed and reaccredited for 2009 in order to offer more flexibility and opportunities for our future global educators. We anticipate being able to offer Postgraduate Certificates in Learning and Development and in Applied Linguistics, Master in Learning and Development, and new Master of Educational Research in 2009.
About Special Education
Special Education programs aim to develop teachers who are able to respond effectively to the diverse needs of all students, particularly those students who experience learning difficulties. The program aims to develop a deeper understanding of issues associated with special needs in classrooms, including the creation of inclusive classroom settings, behaviour management and teaching and communicating with children with high support needs and disabilities.
The principles of Inclusive Education overarch all courses, and specific areas of knowledge include: speech and language difficulties; behaviour management; learning difficulties; social and emotional difficulties; autism spectrum disorder; curriculum responsiveness.
There are several ways to study Special Education at USQ:
Professional Accreditation
The Bachelor of Education program is recognised by the Queensland College of Teachers, the major professional body in Queensland, and with similar bodies in other states.
Please note: The Queensland College of Teachers is required to conduct national criminal history checks on all new applicants for teacher registration in Queensland. A “Working with Children” check will also be carried out prior to commencement of any professional experience.
Postgraduate certificates and Masters programs do not in themselves qualify graduates for teacher registration.
Career Opportunities
This specialisation equips teachers to operate successfully in both Primary (P-7) and Special Education settings in Australia and internationally.
Graduates are also able to work in secondary schools and in the area of disability services.
Our Postgraduate programs are designed to keep pace with the rapidly changing education environment and the educator's expanding role by offering maximum choice and flexibility. This flexibility encourages students to focus on specific areas based on their personal and professional needs, industry requirements and future aspirations, which will enhance career prospects.
