Student Overarching Capabilities and Actions (SOCA)

At USQ, we aspire to develop future educators who demonstrate the confidence, competence and overarching capabilities that enable them to excel in the teaching profession. With this in mind, we have developed the Student Overarching Capabilities and Actions (SOCA) program to enhance your skills and provide you with an educator's advantage. In simple terms, SOCA is an interactive professional development program run for preservice educators, designed to assist in developing classroom strategies and confidence.

These professional development opportunities will help you acquire a wide range of competencies in the areas of literacy, catering for diversity, enhancing student learning and higher order thinking. Workshops are designed to complement regular coursework and target the professional needs of all preservice educators. By participating in these activities, you will achieve the educator’s advantage as you develop essential personal, professional and academic capabilities and actions that are transferrable beyond university.

When is the SOCA program held?

The SOCA program runs twice a week for the first half of each semester. One weekly workshop is an interactive music, brain gym and voice care session; and the following workshop consists of a variety of hands on skill building workshops facilitated by guest presenters.

Participation is acknowledged through a certificate of attendance which demonstrates to future employers your commitment to ongoing professional development.
