Rural and remote opportunities

If you are specialising in the Early Childhood, Primary, Middle or Secondary/Senior teaching areas

Completing professional experience in a rural or remote setting in Queensland will help prepare you for teaching in rural or remote areas after graduation. As this can be quite a costly exercise, we seek sponsorship to assist with the cost of travel and accommodation expenses.

Non- local placements and support for rural placements

For preservice educators who are enrolled in the Graduate Diploma of Learning and Teaching or have successfully completed a minimum of three professional experiences in a four-year program:

  • you may apply to your course examiner to complete your experience at a non-local site at least one month before preferences are due, and organise your placement through the Professional Experience Support Office (PES)
  • Information on financial support, accommodation and transport for rural and remote placements is advertised on the Rural and Remote Educator's Network website. You should research the information on each school site and provide a copy with your application for a non-local site. The Professional Experience Support Office will then follow up on your support.
  • Support for rural placements may be available if you complete experiences in selected schools in North, North-West, South-West and Central Queensland. This funding comes from Northern Priority Country Area Program (NPCAP), North-West Priority Country Area Program (NW PCAP), South West Priority Country Area Program (SW PCAP) and Central Priority Country Area Program (Central PCAP).
  • A list of the schools covered by this organisation and further information is available through the PCAP website.

You must organise and fund your own travel, although you can usually seek reimbursement equivalent to a return bus fare. Information concerning these arrangements will be provided to you on confirmation of your placement in a NW PCAP school or a Central PCAP school. The SW PCAP arrangement means that transport will be provided for you to and from the school for the experience.
