Visiting scholars
We encourage scholarly visits and collaborative research opportunities that may arise from such visits. Scholarly visits should be normally of value to a significant number of academic staff members and/or research students. They should have the capacity to contribute significantly to quality research activities and outcomes within the Faculty.
Program and support
Visiting scholar visits that draw on the resources of the Faculty for more than a week must be approved by the Dean. Normally, the visiting scholar will be provided with an office; computer, telephone, and email (depending on length of visit); and access to library resources including search tools. All other costs are expected to be met by the visiting scholar. Applications that support and extend our research strengths, and are sustainable, are particularly encouraged. Normally, we are able to support only two visiting scholars at any one time.
Expectations of visiting scholars
Visiting scholars are expected to contribute significantly to quality research activities and outcomes within the Faculty. Typically, visiting scholars are expected to:
- interact informally with staff, research students and their supervisors
- consult with and provide advice to staff
- present seminars and /or workshops in the Faculty
- collaborate with staff, research students and their supervisors on the production of joint research projects including the publication of papers.
The program aims at cultivating ongoing collaboration with the visiting scholar.
Approvals
Applications may be submitted at any time but should be submitted well in advance of the proposed visit. Applications by visiting scholars normally should be sponsored by a full-time academic staff member and supported by a statement outlining the purpose, length and proposed outcomes from the visit. A PhD or equivalent qualification should be held by the visiting scholar and a current curriculum vitae also should be attached. They should be submitted to the Associate Dean (Research) in the first instance.
