If you are following a normal enrolment pattern in BEDU, electives will be undertaken in year 4 of the program if you are in the Early Childhood, Secondary, Special Education or Technical and Vocational Education specialisations. Primary specialisation students begin taking electives from Semester 2 of the third year of the program.

The number of courses available to you is large and includes education courses from other specialisations, designated education elective courses, level 5 postgraduate courses from the Faculty of Education’s postgraduate programs, and courses offered through other USQ Faculties.

Please refer to the detailed information about electives in the USQ Handbook.

Selecting electives:

1. Choose courses that are of interest to you and which might contribute to your personal and/or professional development.

2. Consider focussing your elective studies around one or two topic areas. From education areas you can develop a strong emphasis in:

  • Health and Physical Education
  • Special Education
  • Middle Years Teaching
  • Literacies
  • Creative Arts
  • Science
  • Maths

You are also referred to the Faculty of Education Discipline Studies and Elective Booklet for studies you can undertake through other USQ Faculties and the Minor Studies section of the Handbook which also outlines possible courses that can be taken as electives.

3. Secondary specialisation  students can choose to use your elective as a ‘top up’ to one of their teaching areas (highly desirable)or as a standalone course in an area of special interest  and which is not necessarily related to  discipline studies or education courses.

4. The new courses listed below are now available and address the National Curriculum:

EDO3681              Teaching the National Curriculum: Mathematics

EDO3561              Teaching the National Curriculum: Science

EDO3377              Teaching the National Curriculum: English

These courses are highly recommended as electives for primary, early childhood, or special education specialisation students who feel they need additional discipline content preparation in one or more of the above areas.

Any queries regarding elective choices can be directedto the Faculty Student Support Team.
