Michael Sankey and Petrea Redmond discuss Camtasia Studio as an editing tool for lecture recordings

Michael:
I am joined by Dr Petrea Redmond from the Faculty of Education and today we are talking about the use of Camtasia Studio as a way of editing lecture recordings and recordings you might make with Camtasia Relay. So Petrea, you have recorded a lecture. It’s a 2 hour long lecture, but in the lecture there has been a whole lot of pauses that you don’t want students to hear or be exposed to. What do you do about it?

Petrea:
Well the advantage of being able to edit Camtasia is that you are able to edit out items that perhaps, if you forgot to hit the pause button or stop and you kept recording items that you weren’t willing to or if you are looking at something at reusing something that you recorded the semester prior but that you want to change the dates of the assessment or something that is on there. It is not quite as easy to update as other pieces of software such as Adobe Presenter but it does at least provide you with the opportunity to do so. When you just use Camtasia Relay, you don’t have that opportunity.

Michael:
So it is a video capture software in that it captures everything on the screen so that obviously must give you some other options in terms of doing presentations.

Petrea:
It does and you can add different sound tracks to it as well. You can cut out elements. You can, in fact, add in elements as well. I think that once you are confident with the use of the software, it actually creates a far better and more polished result than just using Camtasia Relay and it also enables you to multi-purpose so you can reuse some items that you previously. I’ve kind of found that frequently in my use of Camtasia Relay, I’ll just record within my sessions and if I don’t do the editing the quality isn’t as good. However, some students quite enjoy the warts and all type of experience that they get, rather than a more polished performance. I’ve heard different responses from students.

Michael:
It’s not an easy bit of software to learn. How long do you think it would take to get used to using the software?

Petrea:
Because I don’t use it really regularly I find it hard to get my head back into the space each time I do use it. I think if it was something I was doing, if I was regularly doing modifications to my work it wouldn’t’ take as long but I just felt it does take me a long time to get my head back into the space even after I’ve used it a few times if there is a gap of a few months where I haven’t used it and so it is more difficult to use than other pieces of software that people might have used previously.

Michael:
Thank you. That was great.
