Michael Sankey and Jill Lawrence discuss e-portfolio in USQ courses

Michael:
It is my great pleasure to have associate professor Jill Lawrence with me from the Faculty of Arts, she is the Associate Dean for Learning and Teaching in the faulty but also teaches into a foundations course in the nursing program in relation to communications and Jill uses e-Portfolio as a fundamental part of that course. Jill why do you use e-Portfolio?

Jill:
Well primarily, because when the course started about 5 years ago the nurses wanted an e-Portfolio. So that was the start of my journey with e-Portfolio and it was before they were introduced and you organized to have mahara here and before even the big ALTC project on portfolios was launched. So it was because I was meeting their needs, primarily.

Michael:
Ok

Jill:
But my interest has gone beyond then.

Michael:
So generally the students respond well to the activity? the e-Portfolio activity?

Jill:
They had two e-Portfolio activity two separate piece of assignment in the five years previously and now i’ve reduced it to one but only because the courses are run online now. They are introduced to the mechanics in my other course which is a computing and maths course. So then they start adding their reflections about applying the codes of practise, the nursing codes or the graduate qualities or their review of online learning or those reflections into their e-Portfolio and they can use their e-Portfolio as a start to evidence gathering to prove to their future employers that they should be hired.

Michael:
Ok, so it’s a matter of them creating their personnel or a persona within their studies.

Jill:
And it is also good, that they can put artefacts which they’re called or pieces of evidence, their assignments or the objectives they’ve achieved into their e-Portfolio so it’s a holistic view of their whole learning journey at university.

Michael:
So they are associating, an assignment with some skills that they’ve learnt as evidence.

Jill:
That’s right, and e-Portfolio is a vehicle or the way in which they can collect and display and use that evidence to support their contention that they will be a good employer.

Michael:
Ok, and how do see yourself in this course developing e-Portfolio further?

Jill:
I have developed my own Portfolio. I used it for my last promotion. I’m not a FaceBook person, but i’m comfortable with USQ’s use of the portfolio and use of it and i’m sure that we will see it more throughout the university. For example, in the nursing course they are going to use it in other courses other than these first two courses i’ve been speaking about and so that will reinforce it’s use there. And i think they will be using it more for staff purposes because it is a way for us to demonstrate we have the skills of our next promotion level or to win an award or whatever it is we want to do.

Michael:
Very good, thanks so much for sharing with us Jill. It’s been really helpful

Jill:
It’s a pleasure Michael and thanks for introducing them to USQ.
