Michael Sankey and Cindy Laine discuss the photography facility at USQ

Michael:
So i’m joined by Cindy Laine who is a senior photographer in the Creative Media Services area here at the University, so Cindy what can you offer academic staff through the Photography department?

Cindy:
We like to offer academic staff a comprehensive photographic service that they can use in all their course materials. Also we have our online photographic store, which academics can access and select the images themselves for use.

Michael:
Why would they get you to take a photo as opposed to taking one off of Google?

Cindy:
There are all sorts of complications for taking photos off of Google... Copyright concerns. To use in house images means that we have followed all of USQ’s processes in permissions and how we can use the images whether that’s in publications or on the internet. So they’re assured that all the permissions are in place.

Michael:
So you’ve got your photographic studios, so they can do in-studio stuff. What other links would you go to get photos for these people?

Cindy:
We work both on campus, and off campus. It wouldn’t be the first time that academics have come with us onto photographic shoots to give direction in the particular images that they’re after. We are happy for them to have any input necessary to get the shots as well as drawing on our own skills. We have certaintly done all sorts of things to get photos, whether that is on the ground, in the air, on the water... whatever it takes, whatever their requirements are.

Michael:
What does it cost an academic to get this done?

Cindy:
It doesn’t cost the academic anything in monetary terms. It is really just a process of booking in the job, allocating the time, having a vehicle to get to wherever we need to go... if it’s off campus. They may have a small cost in materials if they require prints of images. But most of the time it is a process of booking it in and we e-mail or put the images on CD for them.

Michael:
Ok, and how would they request you to do something?

Cindy:
There is a request form online. That they fill in, giving us all the details we need. It also states on their whether there would be a cost for materials. So that is all sorted out there.

Michael:
Ok, so you would do photo materials for teaching materials and research centres?

Cindy:
Yes, all of those areas. Anyone who needs photographs comes to us.

Michael:
Excellent! And you do a good job too.

Cindy:
Thankyou Michael.

Michael:
Excellent, thankyou very much for joining us.

Cindy:
No worries.
