Ms Nicola Mead won the Smart Women - Smart State Award for Category 3: Undergraduate Students – Engineering. Nicola is a final year student studying with the Faculty of Engineering and Surveying.

The Smart Women - Smart State Awards shine the spotlight on women and girls who are leading the way in science, engineering and information and communication technology (ICT). The awards recognise Queensland's brightest women and girls achieving in their education or careers in non-traditional fields.

Nicola's topic is "Investigation of Domestic Water End Use in Toowoomba", undertaking invaluable investigations into domestic end-use water consumption in Toowoomba. "Her results will be used to educate the community and promote their participation in water conservation activities. This is particularly important for areas experiencing drought". The work is being supervised by Dr Vasantha Aravinthan and Nicola has also been well supported by Ms Lyn Brodie, both staff members of the Faculty of Engineering and Surveying.
