Instrumentation and Control

This program has been designed for professionals already engaged in related work. Typically, this will be in power station control, mining and processing industries.

As well as a thorough grounding in electrical instrumentation, sensors and control systems, various aspects of mechanical and fluids engineering have been incorporated into this program as they are relevant to the needs of heavy industries. Computer systems are also studied as most control and monitoring of industrial processes is done via computer.

Career opportunities

Many opportunities, usually in 'heavy' industries, will be attractive to graduates of this program. The specification and design of control and monitoring systems is required throughout the electrical power industry, mining companies, metals and other refining industries such as petrochemicals.

Research opportunities

Opportunities exist for research into new types of sensors and control techniques. The Faculty of Engineering and Surveying, for example, has been highly successful in developing new sensors for quality monitoring in the food processing industries.
