My Enrolment

How to enrol in courses

Information is provided to assist students to successfully complete the enrolment process; your enrolment is your responsibility.

We encourage students to enrol for all 3 semesters at the start of any new calendar year. This guarentees your place in the course and if you decide to change your mind you can drop the course/s before the last day to drop with out any penalities to your HECS. This assist us in our planning for forth coming semesters.

Ask USQ

You will find Ask USQ when you log into UConnect. It allows you to search the knowledge base for answers to many of the common questions which students ask. We encourage you to use this as your first point of call when you need quick answers to your questions.

Recommended enrolment patterns

Recommended enrolment patterns for each program of study are listed in the USQ Handbook.

Progression through the program

You will progress through your program by satisfactorily completing all the requirements set out for each course. To be eligible to enrol in some courses (eg Semester 2), you may need to have passed one or more pre-requisite courses. The Pre-Requisite requirements for each course are listed in the course specifications. You should follow the recommended enrolment pattern listed in the Handbook to ensure that the selections you have made are the most appropriate.

Policies and regulations

All current students are required to familiarise themselves with USQ's policies and procedures in regards to USQ Policy LIbrary, fee refunds, appeals and grievance processes.

Course specification

Each course has an official course specification or course blueprint. It is essential that every student enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering and Surveying academic programs be thoroughly conversant with the academic requirements of their enrolled program and the regulations of the University. Examples of pertinent details in these courses specifications are:

  • Pre and co requisites
  • Assessment guidelines
  • Topics
  • Textbooks required to purchase
  • Examinations details

Engineering Fundamentals

Students who satisfy the following requirements may apply, using the Application to Replace ENG1500 Engineering Fundamentals with MAT1500 Engineering Mathematics 1 form.  The application must include supporting documentation that clearly shows that the student has, in the three years prior to that application, achieved either:

  1. an exit level of VHA in Mathematics B from Queensland Year 12 studies; or

  2. an exit level of at least HA in both Mathematics B and Mathematics C from Queensland Year 12 studies; or

  3. satisfactory completion of TPP7183 Tertiary Preparation Program Mathematics Level C; or

  4. a qualification assessed by the Examiner of the course ENG1500 Engineering Fundamentals to be equivalent to that in either (1), (2) or (3) above.

Students should enrol in MAT1500 Engineering Mathematics 1 instead of ENG1500 Engineering Fundamentals if the application is approved.

Assignment receipt and collection

The Faculty of Engineering and Surveying Assignment Policy requires that all assignments for on-campus courses must be submitted through the Assignment Slot, Z Block 4th Floor Enquiries Counter. Students should refer to course specifications for specific assessment details and assignment due dates.

Students enrolled in on-campus courses must submit their assignments with a signed Assignment Cover Sheet. The Assignment Cover Sheet must be downloaded using UConnect.

  1. Log on to UConnect with your User Name and Password
  2. Click on the ULearn tab
  3. Click on Assignment Coversheets button
  4. Select ‘Print Assignment Coversheets'
  5. Click on the current semester
  6. Identify the correct course and assessment item
  7. Click on ‘Show Coversheet'
  8. Print a copy & attach to the front of your assignment

Place in the Assignment slot, Z Block, 4th Floor.

Fees

To establish the approximate cost of your program of choice please refer to the University information on fees.

Changing your major

As a student we encourage you to investigate the realm of the engineering or spatial scientist in each of the branches, so that you are able to confirm and stabilise your position or move to a plan more suited to your interests and abilities. Your Associate Head of program will be able to assist you in making your decision.

You are able to change your plan (major) yourself using UConnect.

Important note, however: if you decide to do this and you have been granted exemptions/credit towards your previous plan, it is your responsibility to get these re-assessed so that they reflect the new plan your have chosen. Other wise you could be in danger of having the wrong exemptions allocated to your plan and this could jeopardise your eligibility to graduate.

An example: Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Civil) to Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Mechanical)

Leave of Absence

You may decide after having studies for a year or two, to take a full academic year out to study. This is a great idea if you plan and extended break and to then resume your studies a year later. You should consult with your Head or Associate Head of Program and/or a counsellor at Student Services before making a final decision.

You may request a leave of absence from your program for a period of one or more years. But note that this period is included in the maximum period of time that is allowed to complete the program. These maximum time frames are listed in a table at the top of the handbook entry for your program.

Upon completion of the period of leave of absence, the University will write to you to ask you wether you wish to resume studying in the next academic years.

Electronic Calculators

Due to the number of relatively cheap, hand-held calculators which are capable of storing large amounts of data, it is necessary that you read the course specifications as they will clearly state whether calculators (and which type) are permitted in examinations.

Engineering students will find that they require a sophisticated device during their studies and due to rapid advances in technology it is recommended that you seek advice from your Associate Head before purchasing one.

Generally, in addition to the normal arithmetic functions you will require: square root functions, power functions, scientific notation, trigonometrical functions, hyperbolic functions, statistical functions, rectangular logarithmical functions to polar, etc, conversions and at least three storage registers.

Text books

The course specification lists the textbooks required for that course. Textbooks can be purchased new from the USQ Bookshop or second hand; the Student Guild has a web service for second-hand books. Textbooks are also available for short term (3 hour) loan from the Library. For more information see the USQ study materials site.
