USQ South African office

USQ has a Education Support Office in South Africa, the South African-Australian Education Centre, which has recently celebrated its 10th anniversary.

The centre originally started with one student, but has already enabled 90 graduands to successfully complete their studies at USQ. Most of these graduands are MBA students.  Mr Johan Badenhorst, Director of the Centre, noted that there are currently 200 students enrolled from South Africa and 75 from Botswana.

The Chancellor, Don Stevens emphasised USQ's policies as a transnational educator and confirmed that USQ was one of the first Australian universities to have a multicultural staff policy and initiatives.

DBA visits

‘The USQ AGSB has launched a new initiative of making experienced supervisors available to DBA candidates in international locations. Should five DBA students be available to travel to Singapore or Bretten or Kelowna, a supervisor could visit them to discuss progress on their dissertation’, says Prof Ronel Erwee, who presents DBA dissertation workshops in these locations. In addition, some supervisors deliver papers at international conferences and some DBA students are willing to travel to the conference location. During 2005, experienced supervisors like Dr Bruce Millett, Dr Jane Summers and Dr Latif Hakim were available for supervisory visits in the UK, Phoenix and Singapore. Jim Hever (pictured) met Dr Millett in the UK. In addition, DBA students like Cheryl Crosthwaite visited their supervisors at USQ.

Mentoring program helps Jeff master his business skills

by Rene Seng

USQ Master of Business Administration student Jeff Mitchell says he has always had an entrepreneurial streak, and if his dedication to his mentoring sessions is any indication, he is well on his way to making his business dreams become a reality.

Jeff MitchellBy day, Jeff is a full-time researcher working as a plant pathologist at the Department of Primary Industries in Toowoomba, and is also a part-time USQ MBA student, attending classes at the USQ Australian Graduate School of Business’ Toowoomba campus.

At night, in between extra study for his MBA courses, he is a project manager of his internet travel business, meetURplanet <www.meetURplanet.com>. The business is a unique website matching local people and travellers all over the planet, allowing 8000 members in over 140 countries to experience the different cultures of the world.

In addition to all this, Jeff also manages to find the time to attend fortnightly mentoring sessions in Brisbane, and to complete the homework given to him by his business mentor, Greg Tomlinson.

Mr Tomlinson, from the Brisbane based human capital management services firm DBM, has been mentoring Jeff since early September as part of USQ’s Beyond Education mentoring program.  Jeff selected Mr Tomlinson after Beyond Education’s coordinator, Guy Williams, identified them as a likely match.

Jeff believes his mentoring sessions with Mr Tomlinson are ‘helping to make his business dreams come true’ and have added to his MBA studies by giving him invaluable real life business experience.

’USQ’s Beyond Education program is about assisting graduates in increasing their employability’, Jeff said.

‘My sessions with Greg have enabled me to identify the skills and factors that employers are looking for, such as being able to communicate, compatibility and things like leadership experience. I have this entrepreneurial mindset and that’s where my passion lies’.

Jeff said the mentoring sessions have covered everything from employability, individual values to psychological profiling.

‘In our sessions, we have discussed employability skills, values and the link between your skills, values and current career’, he said.

‘Greg has even done a Myers and Briggs psychological profile of me and we discovered he and I are actually the same personality type, which is amazing’.

Jeff believes the pair has a great relationship between them, with Greg offering to mentor Jeff indefinitely.

‘My mentoring sessions were due to finish in November, but Greg believes our sessions have been going so well that he has offered to mentor me for as long as I would like, which is fantastic. I would wholeheartedly recommend students be part of this opportunity and if they’re lucky like me, they might get a mentor like mine’.

‘My motivation and momentum are building’, says USQ MBA student and Beyond Education participant, Jeff Mitchell.

SAIPA visit

The USQ Australian Graduate School of Business hosted a group of executives from Iranian car manufacturing company, SAIPA, in July.

Twenty six SAIPA executives visited USQ to attend management workshops presented by the Faculty’s Department of  Management and Organisational Behaviour.  The workshops addressed the role of senior managers in today’s business environment and the latest management tools available to senior managers and directors.

Among the 26 executives was SAPIA’s Managing Director, as well as the General Manager and directors of 20 subsidiary companies. SAIPIA has enrolled more than 20 of these executives in USQ’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) program.

These MBA students will complete their studies externally in Iran, thanks to a partnership between USQ, ARIA and Semnan University, which will provide the teaching facilities and academics on behalf of USQ.

Faculty of Business not-for-profit scholarship program

by Rene Seng

The USQ’s Faculty of Business has celebrated the contribution that not-for-profit organisations make to the community by offering full-scholarships for the Postgraduate Certificate in Management program.

In May, the Faculty of Business invited a select group of not-for-profit organisations to nominate employees for the scholarship for Semester 2 this year, through the USQ Australian Graduate School of Business.

Catherine Jeffkins, Executive Assistant to the CEO of Australian Red Cross, is one such recipient of the scholarship. She said the Postgraduate Certificate in Management program, made available to her through the full-scholarship, will only enhance her role at the Australian Red Cross.

‘The USQ’s scholarship program, for employees of organisations such as those of Australian Red Cross, packaged with the availability to study via the web, has allowed me to continue working full time whilst applying the subject matter of my studies to my work’, Catherine said.

‘So far, I’m thoroughly enjoying my studies in Project Management, which is giving me the theory to apply to projects that I have managed many times over the years.

‘The availability of studying at a distance via the web has also proven beneficial for me as I’ve been able to give it dedicated time in my diary along with the flexibility of catering my study around my family, work and community commitments’.

The Faculty of Business has again offered the scholarships to selected organisations including Lifeline and World Vision, for commencement in Semester 3.
