A Note from the Director

Welcome to the November 2004 edition of USQ AGSB Newsletter. We are very proud of the large number of domestic and international students who graduated in the September graduation.  Joep Joubert, an international MBA student who specialised in OHS indicated in a testimonial ‘…in general the program gave me a lot more confidence to operate and manage at a much higher level, up to top management’.  Tyrone Singelton concurs by saying ‘…undertaking my MBA through the University of Southern Queensland has allowed me to approach problems in a far more holistic and strategic manner, providing me with the necessary tools to develop ‘out of the box solutions’’.  Ismail Moss notes that his Postgraduate Certificate in Management increased his standing in the organisation, ‘my contribution to reorganisation development and the fact that I have been promoted twice must be seen in the context of my learning through USQ’.

This edition highlights the links that the USQ AGSB has with universities in Wuhan and Zurich as well as our arrangements with professional societies such as AIM.

On an academic level it confirms our leadership in project management internationally.  Our electronic journals were selected as the first journals to be highlighted on the McGraw-Hill supersite.  We recognise your participation in knowledge management research.

We successfully promoted our postgraduate programs in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane and received positive media coverage.  Please feel free to notify your work colleagues of the postgraduate bursaries for new students enrolling in 2005.  The article ‘Don’t sell yourself short’ applies to those potential postgraduate students who do not have an undergraduate degree, but wish to study a Postgraduate Certificate in Management in an area related to their current career needs.

Professor Ronel Erwee

Knowledge Management Survey—Thank You

We have received a satisfactory response from our first call in the Knowledge Management Survey, however would value further input from other
postgraduate students who have not yet completed the survey.

For the latest link, please visit
http://usqsurvey.usq.edu.au/survey/ronel/.

The survey seeks honest perceptions of your organization’s implementation of knowledge management (KM) practices.  KM adopts a multi-disciplined approach involving social, as well as technological processes to promote the use and application of knowledge for the achievement of organization and stakeholders’ objectives (AS5037(Int) 2003).

Thank you to those of you who participated and contributed to this innovative and useful project.  We value your input and appreciate you taking the time out of your busy schedules.  At the end of this study, a copy of the survey summary results may be made available to you upon request.  A further update will be provided in the next edition of USQ AGSB News.

USQ AGSB in the News

MBA & Postgraduate Expo - Big Business has worldwide appeal
The USQ Australian Graduate School of Business was delighted to attend the recent 2004 MBA and Postgraduate Expos held in Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne and Sydney.  Feedback received from the Expos confirms that the wide range of programs at USQ’s AGSB are widely accepted in the global market place.  For example, the MBA is one of the largest programs delivered by an Australian university in distance, online and oncampus modes.  It is also apparent that other universities recognise USQ’s unique expertise in distance and online programs by regularly referring students to USQ’s programs.

Online options offer flexibility

At the University of Southern Queensland, most recent Masters and MBA graduates have never spent a single day on campus.

To read more, link to a recent article published in the Courier Mail (6 October 2004).

Note:  USQ recently made the decision to change the learning management system for courses and programs offered via USQOnline.  From the commencement of Semester 3, 2004, all USQOnline courses and programs will be offered via USQStudyDesk using the WebCT platform.  Online students can be assured that such changes will be conducted with a high level of support and expertise, to ensure a smooth transition.

Electronic Journals Listed by McGraw Hill

The internationally renowned publisher McGraw-Hill has selected two of USQ's electronic journals to be linked to its Management supersite and four leading academic textbooks on management, organisational behaviour, human resource management and industrial relations. All international and local student and academic users of the textbooks will then be able to access the two USQ journals.

Two Departments in the Faculty of Business took the lead to design electronic journals as outlets for academics' creative endeavours.

The International Journal of Organisational Behaviour was established in 1998 by the Department of Management and Organisational Behaviour with international and local editorial boards. ‘We have been successful in publishing special editions about leadership and learning in the new economy, diversity, debates on professional doctorates and DBAs and international HRM’, says Prof Erwee, senior Editor of the IJOB.

The International Journal of Business & Management Education was established in 2003 by Dr Mehryar Nooriafshar from the Department of Economics and Resources Management.  ‘This journal contains refereed papers on business and management education which have been submitted by academics and postgraduate research students world wide’, says Dr Nooriafshar.

‘We are very proud that being refereed journals, any articles successfully published will accrue DEST points for local academics. We anticipate that we will be receiving a very favourable response to our calls for papers in knowledge management and innovative methods for teaching and learning’, says Prof Erwee.

South African Market Keen for Project Management Skills

Don’t Sell Yourself Short

Director of the USQ Australian Graduate School of Business, Professor Ronel Erwee, says many experienced business professionals are under-selling themselves because they think that they do not have the qualifications to enrol in a university degree.

‘There are many people who have years of business work experience who wrongly think that because they did not gain a tertiary entrance score when they left school that they are not qualified to enter into a graduate program at university’, Professor Erwee said.

‘At USQ we recognise experience in the workplace and know that mature learners have a lot to offer. Each application is assessed on its merit and we already have many students who have enhanced their career paths and opportunities by gaining formal qualifications in their specific areas of experience.’

Professor Erwee said applicants did not even have to leave home to begin study at USQ as the university’s internationally recognised, award-winning, flexible distance delivery programs allowed students to continue working while they upgraded their qualifications.

She said with relevant work experience students could apply for direct entry in an exciting range of Graduate Certificate programs.

‘We have made sure that our programs are the benchmark in terms of what the business world requires from graduates and we have dedicated lecturers and tutors who through mentoring and example will help our students to succeed in the academic environment.’

‘Our mature students who come to us through direct entry in the Graduate Certificate programs generally perform much better than students who start as school leavers and they often articulate their Graduate Certificate qualifications into Graduate Diplomas and Masters or MBA programs with enormous success.’

Professor Erwee said while students who entered the tertiary system with prior work experience as qualifications would not be ‘spoon fed’ and, while nothing worth achieving was ever ‘easy’, the level of support and feedback from academic staff made the road to success “quite achievable” for anyone with their sights set on the top rung of the ladder.

Euro Affiliation

Professor Sybille Sachs from the University of Applied Sciences in Business and Administration Zurich and Mr Martin Steinbuechel from USQ’s German Study Centre in Bretten were in Toowoomba recently to discuss additional collaboration between the university and its European partners. Professor Sachs, who is also a titular professor at the University of Zurich, said the joint MBA program with USQ has been a success, and that part of her brief while in Toowoomba is to explore ways of growing it further. The course currently has a capacity for 35 students. Mr Steinbuechel’s visit was an opportunity to meet with senior executives and to discuss the possibility of a Doctor of Business Administration course administered through Bretten by USQ and the Swiss university.

Warning!
New Academic Standing, Progression & Exclusion

In Section 5.9 of the 2004 University Calendar, new regulations on academic standing, progression and exclusion have been included.  This could specifically impact on your postgraduate program and you need to carefully manage your successful progression through these programs.

The new regulations about ‘satisfactory academic standing’ are that postgraduate students must maintain a GPA of not less than 3.5. You must have a ‘satisfactory academic standing’ in a program in order to be eligible to graduate from that program. A postgraduate student with a GPA of less than 3.5 will be deemed to have a program status of ‘conditional’ and will be advised that they have to improve their academic performance (for assistance with this, you can contact Student Services or OPACS).  We are monitoring enrolment via the USQConnect program.  A significant number of local and international students have received letters about their unsatisfactory progress during 2003 and 2004.

                   Useful Tips

-           Maintain a GPA of 3.5
            -           Do not fail a course twice
            -           Do not fail more than 3 courses
