USQ AGSB Corporate Club Presentation

The USQ AGSB was recently honoured to showcase its offerings at the USQ AGSB Corporate Club presentation held on 17th May 2004.  The evening allowed over 100 Corporate Club guests an opportunity to increase their awareness of the benefits of studying through the USQ Australian Graduate School of Business.

We were honoured to present Mr John Reynolds as our Guest Speaker.  John
was educated at Cambridge and Sheffield Universities in the UK and holds Degrees in Economics and Business Management.  John was previously Chief Executive of West Australian Newspapers, APN News and Media, The Age and a Senior Executive with Normandy Mining and Santos.  He is currently Chairman of CH4 Limited, a Director of Bank of Queensland & Queensland Cotton, and an advisor to numerous companies and organisations throughout Queensland and Australia.  Mr Reynolds’ presentation focused on the linkage between universities and the community and the importance of producing job-ready graduates.

Prof Ronel Erwee (Director, USQ AGSB) offered Corporate Club members a unique opportunity to visit an MBA oncampus class with international oncampus students and managers.  Such an initiative not only provides an insight into oncampus MBA studies at USQ, but also offers students an opportunity to listen to shared experiences from outside professionals.  If you would like further information on this initiative, please contact Erin White.

Vodacom, 3M, De Beers, Momentum sponsoring their Managers to study at USQ

Prof Ronel Erwee visited the USQ South African Liaison Office during her recent international travels.  Vodacom is a pan-African cellular communications company providing services to customers in South Africa, Tanzania, Lesotho, DRC and Mozambique and Vodafone plc, UK is a major shareholder. The profiles of its chief executive team indicate that most have Bachelor and Masters’ degrees, with the Managing Director, Service Provider Company Shameel Aziz-Joosub, holding a USQ MBA. Vodacom has sponsored selected managers who successfully completed the Vodacom Executive Management Program for postgraduate studies at USQ. USQ AGSB is negotiating with Vodacom about exemptions for the Vodacom Executive Management Program into a Postgraduate Diploma, MBA or Masters degrees.  Prof Erwee’s visit also included negotiations with the human resources directors of Momentum (a financial institution), De Beers (a world leader in diamond mining), MTN (a key cellular communications company) and 3M (a diversified technology company).

USQ AGSB is proud to feature the following Vodacom high achievers who have benefited greatly from their postgraduate studies at USQ:

Frans Smith MBA (Information Systems) semester 2, 2002
Frans currently holds the position of Manager of National Transmission and Data with Vodacom.  He has been with the company for the past 10 years and is responsible for planning and  design, implementation and integration, as well as maintenance and support of the Transport Network Architecture for Vodacom.  When asked how he experienced distance learning with USQ he said ‘for me it was absolutely fantastic. I did it for the personal benefit I got out of it.’  It is therefore not surprising that Frans is planning to apply for the DBA with USQ.

Richard Mason MBA (E-Business) semester 3, 2002
Specialist Interconnect Liaison

The time has come to say goodbye. The past four years of study through USQ has been invigorating, sometimes frustrating, but mostly rewarding. It was a time of hard work, lots of sacrifice, and endless hours of lost sleep! I now understand why they call an MBA ‘the divorcemaker’.  I would like to take this opportunity to compliment USQ on the course. The content was outstanding and current; the lecturers supportive; and the study material of top quality. As for the support I received from the Johannesburg LSO, well.... I don't think I could have made it without you! Thanks for all your encouragement during hard times, your praise when I did well.  I wish you all the best for the future. Please keep up the good work.

Mark MacDonnell MBA (General) semester 3, 2002

Mark MacDonnell started off as a sales representative for Schwarzkopf some years back and was promoted first as national Sales Manager and finally General Manager. He moved to Radiospoor and later to Panasonic before settling at Vodacom as National Business Manager. In 1999 Mark was appointed as Sales Manager Gauteng Region for Vodacom. To quote Mark on his view of studying with USQ – ‘The MBA was undoubtedly the most challenging and inspiring programme I have ever embarked upon. Learning about other subjects and disciplines outside of my area of expertise was probably the most interesting and enlightening.  In short, the programme was as enjoyable as hard work can be, thanks to the support from the local office.’

Agnes Mlambo MBA (General) semester 3, 2002

Agnes completed a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Economics as well as an Honours degree in Financial Management before embarking on the USQ MBA program. Agnes started working at Schering, a pharmaceutical company, as assistant accountant before taking on the position as Regional Financial Manager at Vodacom in Sandton for the past 4 years. Agnes has just been appointed as Senior Financial Manager of the Courier and Freight Group in June this year. Agnes started her MBA in June 1999 and sat her first exam during her maternity leave. She agrees that if it was not for USQ’s flexibility in terms of students being able to study when it suits their personal circumstances, she might have not completed the degree. She also said that the knowledge she acquired from the program is priceless and that she will take a break for a year before applying for the DBA.

If you have a postgraduate success story, we welcome your contributions and ask that you contact Erin White.

Student Survey Request

During 2004, you will be approached to participate in a research project on knowledge management in organizations. The aim of the project is to design a knowledge management scale, to refine the scale with the assistance of a sample of mature age postgraduate students and to modify the scale for future research projects. The significance of the project is to deliver a quantitative scale that incorporates the multidimensional nature of the construct to researchers and practitioners in the field.

The research is designed to adhere to USQ ethics guidelines and is registered as a Faculty of Business research project. The Faculty is aware that some postgraduate students do not want to participate in surveys. We are therefore keeping a register of staff and researchers surveying students in addition to the few informal surveys done by course leaders in particular courses.

Visit by Thailand DBA Students

We were recently delighted to welcome two of our international DBA students, Dr Apisit Chattananon (Corporate Communication Director, Diethelm Trading Co. Ltd) and Ms Lackana Leelayouthayotin (Chief Executive Officer, Cerebox (Thailand) Ltd) to the university campus.  Apisit and Lackana travelled to Australia from their home country Thailand.  External students form such a large component of our cohorts, and it is always a pleasure to ‘put faces to names’ when students decide to visit the campus.

Pictured (above) Apisit & Lackana during their recent visit to USQ, along with Prof Ronel Erwee (Director USQ AGSB)

Pictured (below l-r) Prof Bill Lovegrove VC, Prof Malcolm Mackay, Mr Vichet Kasemthongsri (Deputy Minister of Transport, Thailand), Dr Apisit Chattananon, Ms Lackana Leelayouthayotin (Chief Executive Officer, Cerebox (Thailand) Ltd), Dr Jiraseak Trimatesutthorn (Consultant to Deputy Minister of Transport, Thailand).

Profs Lovegrove and McKay noted that they were very impressed with the quality of USQ DBA graduates that they met in Bretten and at the Singapore graduation ceremony.
