Graduation Success Stories

The USQ AGSB and Faculty of Business congratulate those students who successfully completed their studies at USQ and graduated on 1 May 2004!  You can be very proud of your achievements and know that your friends, family and the university are equally delighted with your success.  We are proud to feature a selection of students who have benefited greatly from their recent postgraduate studies at USQ.

Mr Andrew Hanaria
(pictured left, with his wife & children) recently completed his Master of Business (MBA) studies.  ‘After being in the workforce for many years, I was required to change my mindset to adapt from a work environment to a study environment, which required commitment and discipline.  I am proud of my achievements and hope they will provide a fine example for my children to follow.’

Ms Parminder Sidhu and Mr Gurpreet Sidhu
(pictured right, with Prof Ronel Erwee at Graduation) both recently graduated from the Master of Information Technology Professional (MITP).  Both have since been appointed as Tutors for Canterbury College at Sydney, to teach USQ's IT and e-Business courses.  We congratulate Parminder and Gurpreet on their achievements as a very successful ‘dual career couple’.

Master of Project Management Recent Accreditation

Project Management continues to be the largest specialisation in the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program by a considerable margin, so you can be assured that your studies in project management are at the forefront of contemporary postgraduate education.

To reflect this international trend towards management by projects (MbP), USQ has recently accredited the new Master of Project Management (MPM) program, which also incorporates the new Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management (PDPM). Commencing in Semester 1 2005, this provides greater choices for students who enter postgraduate studies doing the Postgraduate Certificate in Project Management (PCPM), as they can now articulate into a range of programs including the PDPM, the MPM, the Master of Management (MMGT) or the MBA. From the MPM and the MBA, students can articulate into the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), which also increases the flexibility in study paths, which is of great benefit in rapidly-changing career situations.

As part of the MPM accreditation, the core courses of the PCPM have been reviewed, and the following changes have occurred:

·        The existing four courses of MGT8024, MGT8025, MGT8026 and MGT8027 have been compressed into three by deleting MGT8026.

·        The content has been redistributed so that the program still covers all nine knowledge areas of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). See the 2005 USQ Handbook when it is released in August for full details.

·        MGT8022 Project Management Framework now becomes the fourth core course of the project management program. It will act as an overarching course to give students an holistic overview of project management so it should be one of the first courses studied.

·        Students who achieve level 5 or level 6 certification from the Australian Institute of Project Management under its RegPM program can gain one credit exemption from future studies in the PGPM or MPM. See the 2005 Handbook or contact the AGSB liaison officers for full details of this exemption.

All courses are being rewritten this year so they are fully up to date, and study materials will be complemented by CD-ROMs containing multimedia enhancements to take advantage of the learning benefits offered by digital media. If you have any queries, please contact the postgraduate liaison officers at the AGSB or the project management course leaders.

Upcoming Faculty of Business Research – Assistance Required

The USQ AGSB will soon be contacting selected postgraduate students to participate in a Faculty of Business research project – ‘knowledge management within your organisations’.

Warning!
New Academic Standing, Progression & Exclusion

In Section 5.9 of the 2004 University Calendar, new regulations on academic standing, progression and exclusion have been included.  This could specifically impact on your postgraduate program and you need to carefully manage your successful progression through these programs.

The new regulations about ‘satisfactory academic standing’ are that postgraduate students must maintain a GPA of not less than 3.5. You must have a ‘satisfactory academic standing’ in a program in order to be eligible to graduate from that program. A postgraduate student with a GPA of less than 3.5 will be deemed to have a program status of ‘conditional’ and will be advised that they have to improve their academic performance (for assistance with this, you can contact Student Services or OPACS).  We are monitoring enrolment via the USQ Connect program.  A significant number of local and international students have received letters about their unsatisfactory progress during 2002 and 2003.

                   Useful Tips

-           Maintain a GPA of 3.5
            -           Do not fail a course twice
            -           Do not fail more than 3 courses
