A note from the Director

Ronel Erwee, Director of USQAGSBStrategic positioning of the Faculty and its programs

The Faculty has completed an external review process which articulated the Faculty’s competitive advantage, its position, its desired future, and the best way forward. The Dean, Prof Allan Layton, has formulated the mission of USQ’s Business Faculty as “to operate as a supportive learning community of staff providing dual mode access - around Australia and around the world - to a high quality and challenging business-focussed education, producing graduates able to contribute to the creation, growth and leadership of sustainable enterprises in a globalised marketplace”.

To achieve its objectives and strengthen its competitive position, we have also analysed our current program portfolio. In order to capitalise on our academic expertise, competency in distance education and service to national and international markets, we made a number of key decisions about our program management. The first decision is that Master’s programs namely the MBA, MBA(I), MPA and MITP  remain pivotal to our continued success.

The Dean further points out that students benefit from these decisions because the Faculty is building programs on “core strengths, retains its discipline coverage; its good reputation as a dual mode provider; the considerable experience of its staff in such delivery; the high quality of its distance and on-line learning materials (and the associated support systems); the quality, dedication and commitment of its staff to be supportive and pastoral towards the Faculty’s students whilst at the same time delivering challenging academic programs of internationally competitive quality”.

A second decision is that from 2007 the Faculty will focus its energies into a more manageable range of areas to strategically position itself for the next challenging chapter of its development. We decided to consolidate a wide range of specialist Masters degrees and Diplomas into a few key Masters programs with the relevant specialisations. The reformulated Master of Management will contain the specialisations of Information Systems,  International Business,  Leadership,  Human Resource Management,  Police Management,  Safety, Health & Environment.

The reformulated Master of Commerce will include Accounting; Law and Advanced Financial Management as specialisations. Students who are currently studying any of the named Masters degrees in these areas will be assured of completing their programs under the original award structure. However these students are encouraged to complete their programs as soon as possible. Those students who wish to transfer into the new consolidated Master of Management or Master of Commerce will be assisted to do so.

A third decision was to retain some specific awards such as the Postgraduate Certificate of Management that will contain the full range of specialisations named above. Furthermore the Master of Project Management will remain and also be taught on-campus in intensive mode in Springfield.

The fourth set of decisions focussed on research degrees. The Master of Business has been renamed as the Master of Business Research and the Postgraduate Diploma of Business Research will become an exit program only. Students who wish to enrol in a PhD may, with the permission of the Director …, exit from the MBSR with a Postgraduate Diploma of Business Research to enrol in a PhD. The DBA is also restructured to recognise the excellent research that students produce and to place a greater emphasis on the dissertation component.

The final decisions were to use Postgraduate Diplomas only as exit options out of Masters degrees. We are currently investigating another transitional Master of Business degree to incorporate specialisations in property studies, applied finance and personal financial planning.

The positive news for USQ students is that the Faculty has seriously reconsidered its strategic position and consolidated programs to focus on our core strengths. New students will be enrolled from 2007 into the new programs.

USQ Springfield Commends First Graduates

by Fiona Taylor

The first students to complete their studies at USQ's Springfield Campus were recognised at a special ceremony on Friday 10 November.

USQ Vice Chancellor, Professor Bill Lovegrove gave his personal congratulations to the graduands during the ceremony which took place in the Harvard Room on Level 6.

'It is quite an achievement to complete University studies, and being the first graduates of a particular Campus makes it an even more memorable occasion. I look forward to congratulating the students, some of whom have travelled internationally to study with USQ,' Professor Lovegrove said.

USQ Springfield Campus Director, Doug Fraser, said the ceremony was be significant in the history of the Campus.

'Although not a formal graduation, as the students are yet to receive the results of their final exams, Friday’s ceremony is significant in recognising an important milestone in USQ Springfield’s history,' Mr Fraser said.

'The ceremony will acknowledge USQ Springfield’s first graduates, a number being international students.

'In time the graduation ceremonies will grow but it will be 2009 when the size of these will swell with the first undergraduates receiving their degrees.'

More than 10 postgraduate students were recognised at the ceremony, having completed either a Master or Postgraduate Certificate in Project Management or a Postgraduate Certificate in Management, as well as studies in Public Relations.

One of those students is Liam Payne, who completed a Master of Project Management.

Liam works as a Project Manager for OneSteel and said the experience of studying at USQ Springfield had been great.

'I looked into doing the Master of Project Management at USQ Springfield because I’d previously completed an MBA and wanted further education within business, in terms of strategy planning and implementation,' he siad.

'Many other universities offer Project Management in the Engineering or Built Environment Faculties, but at USQ Springfield it is offered in the Business Faculty'.

Liam said he particularly liked the intensive mode workshops which allowed him to complete his studies while working full time (and renovating his house).

'From a personal perspective, the value from on campus study at USQ Springfield included interaction with other students on the practical application of theory in their particular business environment, as well as the opportunity to increase a network with like-minded individuals,' Liam said.

'In terms of professional development, benefits included further understanding of Project Management as a discipline for myself and OneSteel, and the ability to utilise what I have learned for business enhancement and capability improvement.

'It feels great to be one of the first graduates from USQ Springfield for the personal and professional value, as well as the ability to assist and advocate USQ as a provider in education on Project Management into the future.
