Commonwealth supported place

A Commonwealth supported place is where the Australian Government makes a contribution towards the cost of your higher education and you as a student pay a student contribution amount, which varies depending on the courses undertaken.

To be eligible for a Commonwealth supported place, students must have sufficient Student Learning Entitlement (SLE).

Types of Commonwealth Supported student

Students who are offered Commonwealth Supported places are categorised into one of the following groups:

  • Students who commence from 1 January 2010 and onwards: are subject to the same Student Contribution as students who commenced their study prior to that date with the exception of students in Education and Nursing which will be charged at the Band 1 rate.

  • Students who commence from 1 January 2009 and onwards: students commencing an award program from 2009 and onwards will pay the national priority rate for courses undertaken in mathematics, statistics and science. The new lower amount will also apply to continuing students who commenced prior to 2009 in a non-Natural and Physical sciences program, and after 1 January 2009, transfer to a Natural and Physical Sciences program of study.

  • Students who commenced in 2008: students commencing an award program in 2008 are subject to the same Student Contribution as students who commenced their studies prior to 1 January 2008 with the exception of subjects in accounting, commerce, administration and economics which will increase to Band 3.

  • Students who commenced prior to 1 January 2008: students who have commenced an award program prior to 1 January 2008 who have not completed that program continue on the pre-2008 rate of Student Contribution until the end of 2012 provided they do not complete their current program.

Not sure if you have pre-2008 status?

You are a pre-2008 student if you meet the following criteria:

  • a student who commenced study as a Commonwealth Supported student before 1 January 2008 and you have not completed that program.
