Can I afford university?

The short answer is yes. Although you will probably have to give up something (maybe some income, maybe some of your leisure time) it is definitely worth it in the end.

This investment you make can have a big impact on your career – and not just from a knowledge perspective.

From a practical point of view - there are two main costs associated with university study:

  1. your university course fees, and
  2. textbooks.

Of course you will also have living costs in addition to these.

Many students are able to defer their university fees through the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP). HELP is a set of loans funded by the Commonwealth Government provided to eligible students enrolled in Commonwealth supported places. This means the government will assist in paying all or part of the student contribution amount directly to the university on your behalf.

Textbook costs may vary, but you may need to allow up to $500 a semester if you want to buy your textbooks new. Textbooks are also available second hand. The Student Guild runs a second hand textbook service (online as well – so our distance students don’t miss out!). You can also buy second hand textbooks direct from other students.

We also offer services to help students with their finances, for example assistance with budgetingStudent Services also has other information about agencies that might be of assistance to you such as government benefits and job agencies.
