Editing and Publishing at USQ gives you the practical and theoretical skills necessary to succeed in this dynamic industry, starting with proofreading and copyediting and moving to substantive and style editing. You will cover a wide range of genres, including educational, fiction and web editing and you will explore legal and ethical considerations in the publishing process.
The role of the editor in publishing teams is important, with a strong emphasis on teamwork, including briefing designers, artists, onscreen professionals and printers.
You don't need a prior knowledge of publishing, although many students have a background or a current role in the industry. You will have the opportunity to extend your knowledge and skills from traditional print publishing to the evolving technologies and workflows of digital publishing. Working on real texts, you will progress from editing short passages to developing a full-length manuscript, which you will take from assessment through to editing and publishing.
Upon completion of your study, you will have obtained skills to work in different publishing sectors. As well as an introduction to trade, government, academic and corporate publishing, you will develop the tools to establish and develop a sustainable, professional editing practice.
