English Literature

The English Literature major will develop your skills in forming critical arguments, conducting research, and documenting evidence. You will be encouraged to be analytical and develop a clear and expressive writing style in a range of modes.

Over the couse of your study, you will examine both the great texts, and innovative and contemporary works of poetry, prose, drama, film, new media and critical essays. You will also have the opportunity to develop your independence and creativity by completing a project under supervision on a writer, genre, or literary period of your choosing.

Some of the texts you will study include poetry and some fiction from the Renaissance, the Romantics, the Victorians and the Moderns. You will also have a close look at how a set of famous Australian stories came to form the Bush Legend; and encounter some more modern, metropolitan stories which have challenged it.

English Literature is offered as a full undergraduate major as well as an honours and masters pathway to the PhD.
