Social Science

Social scientists are interested in people, groups of people, and interactions between people. This leads us to study a vast range of topics such as individual people, ideologies, national cultures, social movements. But essentially it boils down to two things, the relationship between them; individual people, our biographies and private troubles, and society or public issues.

Nobody knows how many refugees there are in the world. Therefore, nobody knows how many refugee children there are, or what sort of an education they are getting. But some organisations around the world are asking social scientists to find out. With a degree in social science you could be doing work like this in parts of Africa, South America, South East Asia, even China.

By studying social science with us, you will be able to address some of society's most compelling questions on voting behaviour, racism, crime, and religious beliefs; all choices that individual people make that have an effect on others. You will also look at poverty, refugee migration, and education.

You might study social science because you want to work with people. You might want to have a degree that widens your job prospects. After all, the job market will be very different in three years. Or you might just want to understand your own life better, the relationship between your biography, your private troubles, and the wider society of which we are all part.
