Adjusting to study

If you are new to studying or are returning after a long break, becoming an efficient study machine (or an effective university student) takes a bit of time and a bit of adjustment.

You’re not alone

You might feel like you are the only one who is a bit overwhelmed or doesn’t understand the lingo - but you’re not.

If you are the first one in your friendship group or your family to go to uni - congratulations! We are excited to have you here with us.

At USQ we know that everyone’s path to university will be different, as are their expectations. Whether you study on-campus or online, at Springfield or in Singapore, we have dedicated resources to make sure, whatever your situation, you feel confident and supported in your study.

Talk to your Student Relationship Officer, or Student Support team members and they will help get you in contact with people who be of assistance.

We’ve prepared for you

As part of your degree all your first year subjects (courses) have exercises and assessment items designed to build your skills and teach you the basics of studying at university level. You'll learn:

  • how to write an essay
  • how to reference properly, and
  • how to participate in tutorials.

You can also choose other courses that will allow you to understand more about uni culture and help to build your communication skills and confidence. If you need further training in areas like maths or science, there are courses for those areas too.

We’ll help you to get to where you want to go

Your lecturers and tutors will expect you to produce a high standard of work at uni (higher than Year 12), so don’t be disappointed if you don’t get a high mark on your first piece of assessment.

Studying at uni isn't just about reading your textbooks cover to cover - you’ll also develop academic skills such as analytical engagement, and the creation of theoretical knowledge. Don’t worry if you don’t know what they are now!

If you are looking for a bit of a refresher or you want to brush up on your skills, have a look at our Tertiary Preparation Program (TPP). This free program is designed to help you ‘bridge the gap’ between school or work and university.

We’re here to help

There will be times when you will need some help - don’t be too shy to ask one of our Student Relationship Officers who assist you with:

  • enrolling
  • services for students
  • fees, HECS and HELP
  • pointing you toward the best person to contact; and
  • checking your records or academic results.

Your study materials will also include information on how to contact your lecturer and the support staff from your faculty.
