Deciding what to study

 Step 1

What should I study?

Making a decision about what to study can be pretty daunting, maybe you have a clear idea about the career you would like to have, and maybe you would like some help in figuring that out. Either way, USQ can help you!

I know what I want to study

That’s fantastic! Here is a few key points to consider as you start thinking about your transition to USQ:

  • have a chat to your guidance counsellor at school and make sure that you are studying the subjects that you need to, to be eligible for that degree
  • you may not get into your dream degree so it is important to have a few different options available to you
  • check out our alternative pathways, just in case you don’t get your preferences
  • don’t forget to study hard now, to improve your chances of being accepted.

I don’t know what to study?

Most people feel like this so you are in good company! Choosing a career is a big decision but we have a team of people here to help you. Here is list of steps you can take to help you make the hard decisions:

  • have a look at our degrees and courses to check out what’s available. Who knows, there could be degrees in there that you have never heard of, but match up with your interests and hobbies
  • talk to people – what does a nurse/teacher/lawyer/scientist actually do?
  • do some work experience to see what the job is all about
  • make an appointment to see the school careers counsellor (or the USQ Careers Counsellors) – with your parents or just by yourself
  • attend our Student Experience day or Open Day to experience life at USQ Toowoomba.
 Step 2

What do I do now?

If you are already in Year or 11 and 12, you are already on track! If you have had a look through the degree guide and know what degrees you want to study, start thinking about your preferences and what OP you need to achieve to get into your chosen courses and study hard!

Around August of each year, the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) open their round for applications for the following year Semester One start. This is when you need to complete your QTAC Application with your preferences.

Then you wait wait with thousands of other Year 12 students throughout the nation to find out if your preference are accepted. If your preferences don’t get accepted…don’t worry. There are also TAFE to USQ pathways available to you which will contribute credit toward your chosen USQ degree. We can work with you and TAFE to help you achieve your study success.

 Step 3

I've applied to study, but now what?

If you have already submitted your application form, you can now follow the next steps towards beginning your study.
