How can I meet my family commitments and study?

If one issue is common to a lot of our students it is how to best manage your time when you have the competing demands of study, work, family and friends.

Balancing study and home life can be a challenge, especially if you have not studied for a while, or have family or work commitments.

When commencing tertiary study for the first time, or after a break, you will go through a ‘transition’ phase where you learn to adjust to the demands of your study and university life.

This will be an adjustment period for your family and friends as well, as they learn to accommodate the reality of study demands as it affects their life (like not being able to drop everything to “look at this!” right then! Or come on a spur of the moment road trip.)

But in our experience, your family and friends learn pretty quickly and are really proud of you – so they handle it.

All students (you included) will feel pressure when assignments and exams are due, particularly in the second part of the semester.

Once you begin studying, additional pressure is placed on all members of a household.

Our students tell us it is important to take advantage of quieter times during the semester when you can spend time with family and friends, as there will be times when it feels like study has taken over your life.

Having the support of friends and family will be important in helping you to stay motivated and reach your goals.
