Jargon and myth busters

USQ understands that all of the new words and information used by universities can be confusing. So we want to take this confusion out of your journey to USQ!

Before you go any further into your university research, watch our crash course video in Uni Jargon 101 to bust the myths and give you the facts you are looking for. You'll also hear from some of our students about their experience with USQ.   • Undergraduate program – you have never previously completed a degree and typically takes 3 to 4 years to complete
  • Postgraduate program - you have completed a degree or equivalent work experience
  • Part-time – 1 or 2 courses (subjects)
  • Full-time – 3 or 4 courses (subjects)
  • Major – usually 8 subjects within a specific program
  • Minor – usually 4 subjects within a specific program
  • Distance/online – studying off-campus with most communication mainly through the Internet
  • Course - subjects that are studied as part of a program. Some programs have core courses which are designed to give a basic understanding of the field of study
  • SRO – Student Relationship Officer, your SRO is there to help you with every step of your journey
  • Lecture – a presentation by academic staff to students, usually done on-campus but you can also listen to them online
  • Tutorial – a smaller group of student who meet to discuss and work through course material – like a group discussion forum. Tutorials are run by a tutor who can help you with any of your questions
  • Workshop – a lecture and tutorial combined into one session
  • Faculty – a number of academic divisions grouped together under one heading
  • Student Services – a department within USQ which offers a range of services to students including financial advice and loans, accommodation, disability support, careers advice, medical help, counselling etc.
